As schools reopen it is time that the newspaper and media broaden their perspective and report on the wide variety of amazing and rewarding events in which our students excel and enjoy. They should do so on a weekly basis, maybe every Thursday. You could even keep the paper the same size and simply one day each week replace the sports pages with other school news.

You’d have a hard time fitting it all in, but it would be a start. Report on math clubs, debate clubs and Odyssey of the Mind. Share the talents of our music, art and drama students. Let everyone know the amazing work that Key Clubs and other volunteer groups do, or unique groups like Taiko drumming.

If what you need is competition, it’s there — most of these events have Districts and States. If what you want is upcoming stars who have worked for years and years to develop their craft, it’s there, and in most every school across our state. In the process you would celebrate so many more students, and would honor all they do.
