Fred William Benner

FARMINGDALE – Fred William Benner, 90, went to be with his Lord and Savior on Thursday, Sept. 9, 2021, following a brief illness. Fred was born in Hallowell, on Sept. 1, 1931, to Gladys Hope (Warren) Benner and Fred White Benner.He grew up in Hallowell with his brother and two sisters. He graduated from Hallowell High School and Eastern Bible Institute, Framingham, Mass.He married Eleanor Dobbins on Nov. 22, 1958. Together they raised a family of three sons and two daughters in Farmingdale. Fred was the owner of Benner’s Home Decorating for many years and specialized in laying tile. He was in construction doing many projects for the school districts and building a number of homes in the area. Fred was also the faithful pastor of the Wayside Chapel in West Gardiner for over 60 years, leading many souls to Christ. Fred leaves a legacy of faithfulness to his children and grandchildren. He embodied this word to his wife, family, and the church he served with such dedication. His knowledge and commitment to the Word of God was inspiring and an example set for the next generations.Fred was predeceased by his parents, his beloved wife of 62 years, Eleanor May (Dobbins) Benner, a sister, Ellen Whalen and her daughter, Esther.Fred is survived by a brother, Warren Benner and his wife; a sister, Esther Longfellow; three sons- Andrew Benner and his wife, Stephanie, James Benner and his wife, Karen, and Stephen Benner and his wife, Lisa, all of Farmingdale; two daughters, Susan Shepherd and her husband, Eric, and Linda Stahlnecker and her husband, Jim, all of Farmingdale; 13 grandchildren, Devin, Bradley, Eva, Westley, Nicholas, Elizabeth, Joshua, Nathaniel, Julia, J. Benjamin, Emalee, Amanda and Sarah; one great-grandchild, Ezra; and many nieces and nephews.Visiting hours will be on Monday, Sept. 20, from 4 – 6 p.m., at Plummer Funeral Home, 16 Pleasant Street, Augusta. A Christian celebration of life will be held on Tuesday, Sept. 21, at 11 a.m., at the Wayside Chapel, West Gardiner.
