Donald K. Vannah Sr.

LITCHFIELD – Donald K. Vannah Sr., “Allagash Logger and Gravedigger”, 88, of Litchfield, Maine, died at home surrounded by his family on Sunday, Sept. 19, 2021.He was born in Litchfield, Maine, on July 2, 1933, the son of Donald and Margaret (Scruggs) Vannah. Donald lived in Litchfield most of his life. He started working on the Vannah family farm at a very young age, spent several years logging in Ashland and continued working in the woods until He “retired” at 62. Donald then spent 20 years as the head groundskeeper at The Litchfield Plains Cemetery. He was a hard working, kind and generous man who always took the time for a conversation. He loved baseball, The Red Sox, tinkering in his barn, spending time with his family and friends. He will be remembered by many as ” The strongest man in Litchfield ” He was predeceased by his parents; wife of 52 years, Louise M. Vannah; two sisters; Shirley Gregg and Phyllis Macloud, and a brother, Roger Vannah.Donald is survived by three sons, Donald Vannah and his significant other, Tracy, Russell Vannah and wife Kathy, Darryl Vannah and wife Angie, all of Litchfield; three sisters who he loved dearly, Barbara Lovering and Loraine Gregg of West Gardiner, Marion Boynton of Jefferson; his brother Larry Vannah also of Litchfield; seven grandchildren, Rhonda, Russell, Donald F., Amanda, Karla, Kody, and Kasey; Six Great- grandchildren, Riannabelle, Ryatt, Taylor, Donald, Kayleigh, and Lily; one Great-Great Grandson, Cooper, and many nieces, nephews and cousins.A graveside service will be held on Friday, Sept. 24, at 10 a.m., at the Litchfield Plans Cemetery, Plains Road, Litchfield. There will be a gathering at the Family home on Huntington Hill Road in Litchfield after the service. Arrangements are entrusted with Staples Funeral Home and Cremation Care, 53 Brunswick Avenue, Gardiner, Maine.
