I want to thank David Flanagan for the professional opinion column, “To forge clean-energy future, Maine needs hydropower, established utilities” (Sept. 21). His understanding of how to maintain sound reliability by staying with the current CMP and Versant utilities who provide the majority of the power to Maine consumers, rather than jumping ship into a public-owned structure, was enlightening. The phenomenal costs to the consumers would be mind blowing.

Holding the Public Utilities Commission to the fire to do their job regulating these utilities is the proper way, just as the Maine voters approved many years ago.

Concerning the corridor project, the clear view of reducing the carbon footprint of all of New England can easily be done through the renewable hydropower delivered from Quebec to Massachusetts. What most Mainers do not know is that a portion of the generation coming through the corridor is earmarked for Maine. This is a sweet deal and should be well accepted. There are also other benefits received to the individual towns and state tax revenues as well.

Thank you, David Flanagan, for a well-explained opinion, and thank you for very clear, professional leadership of Maine’s largest utility. You are appreciated.
