River Arts of Damariscotta plans to present a solo show of Marli Thibodeau’s work in the River Room at 36 Elm St.
The show, “Freedom + Discipline,” runs from Thursday, Oct. 7, through Wednesday, Oct. 27. An opening reception and artist talk on the language of non-objective composition will be held from 2-4 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 9.
Thibodeau is a contemporary artist born in the Hudson Valley of New York who lives in Rockland. Her work is influenced by the natural world and the lineage of Abstract Expressionism. She immerses herself in the study of the landscape around her and in the inner landscape of self-discovery through movement and visual arts.
“I believe that everyone has a unique way of expressing the experience of who they are, and I’ve discovered that mine is through unchoreographed visual and movement art,” Thibodeau said, according to a news release from the gallery. “I study the structure and movement of the natural world around me and bring that experience into the studio when I paint. This body of work explores the idea of the freedom that resides inside discipline. As an artist, I find my greatest freedom comes from the structures of discipline, and I’ve further explored the use of structure/ discipline and how it relates to intuition/freedom in these paintings.”
Thibodeau maintains a year-round studio in Rockland and teaches Azul Conscious Movement, a path of personal transformation. Her work has been exhibited in Maine and is held in private collections throughout the United States and Europe. She can be found at marlithibodeau.com.
