Paul LePage is a lot of things, but stupid is not one of them. After leaving office, he chose to abandon his home state for Florida, making the migration that many Maine retirees have made over the years. LePage was getting old and tired and wanted a warm place to warm his bones and keep his money tax-free. Then, on July 9, 2021, LePage posted a photo to his Facebook page showing that he had moved back to Maine after just a couple of short years. It surprised many people at the time, myself included. But now I understand.

At 71 years old, Paul LePage was in the middle of a pandemic, in one of the highest-risk age ranges, with a history of health problems. LePage is an intelligent man. He could see the numbers we were all seeing in the papers and on TV every day. Every day, Florida’s case numbers were getting higher and higher, despite the attempts to fraudulently lower them. LePage knew it was only a matter of time before he, or someone he loved, caught COVID.

He could also see Gov. Mills holding the fort against COVID, just as Joshua Chamberlain and the 20th Maine had held out against the traitorous Confederacy. Obviously, LePage decided to offer Gov. Mills his sign of approval and move back to Maine to weather the storm.

To that I say, thank you, Mr. LePage, for having such high confidence in our beloved Gov. Mills that you would bring yourself and your family back to Maine.
