FARMINGTON — Franklin County commissioners voted 2-0 Tuesday to accept a bid from an Augusta company to install a new septic system at the Sheriff’s Office, human resources/administrative assistant Tiffany Baker said Wednesday.

Commission Chairman Terry Brann of Wilton and Commissioner Clyde Barker of Strong voted to approve the contract. Commissioner Lance Harvell of Farmington was absent.

The county received three bids for the project. The contract was awarded to CCC Construction, which offered to do the work for $9,550, Baker said. Harris Septic Services in Chesterville bid $12,080 and C.H. Stevenson of Wayne bid $16,025, she said.

The money is expected to be taken from the town’s share of the federal American Rescue Plan Act. The county has received about $2.9 million of $5.86 million from the federal government. The other half is expected in 2022.

A septic system serves the Sheriff’s Office and the Detention Center.

Two more projects are in the planning stages. One is to replace tanks and pumps in the existing system for the jail. It would serve just the jail. Another project is to separate storm water drainage, according to county Road Supervisor Mike Pond. Pond owned a septic system installation company before he retired.

Commissioners also agreed to replace the deteriorated bridge decking on Schoolhouse Road in Madrid Township. The county owns 211 feet of the road, which stops before the bridge. The county discontinued the road to winter maintenance previously. Nobody knows who owns the bridge, Pond said. The state indicates the county doesn’t own it but the residents on the road believe the county does.

For safety purposes, commissioners agreed to replace the deck with new running planks and one bridge mat. Once the deck is done, commissioners plan to turn the bridge over to residents to maintain.
