Marjorie McPherson Jacobs

MT. VERNON – Marjorie McPherson Jacobs left this world on Oct. 12, 2021 exactly as she wanted, at home on her beloved farm in Mt. Vernon, Maine with Tom, Cathy, Becca and Beccca’s husband Matt at her side, at the age of 96. Marjorie was born on Nov. 26, 1924 to Harold and Alice McPherson at their home on the Vaughn Road in Hallowell, Maine. She and her twin brother, Harry, joined their older sister and their parents on their family farm. She was later joined by two more brothers and four more sisters.

Throughout her childhood, Marjorie worked on the farm, hand milking cows and “peddling” milk to the residences of Hallowell before she would head off to school.

At the time, at the age of 15, she drove her small milk delivery truck all around Hallowell, talking to everyone she met, and became well known by everyone.

In 1948 she met and married Fred Jacobs from Mt. Vernon. They moved to the city (Augusta) and Fred worked for the DOT. After a few short years, they both realized that farming was their passion, so in the spring of 1952, they and their two children, Kathy and Mark, moved to 657 North Road in Mt. Vernon to take over the farm of Fred’s father, Carl Jacobs. She lived there ever since.

Marjorie spent the next 40 years working alongside her husband on the North Road farm. She milked the cows, running two bucket milkers twice a day, 7 days a week and carrying 5 gallons of milk to the tank. She also took care of all the calves and made sure all of the milking equipment was spic and span every day, as well as raising their three children. Her youngest, Tom, was born in 1953. She was a real hard working woman!

In 1990, Marjorie and Fred decided to retire and take life easy, so they sold all of their cows. They spent the next year visiting their son, Tom, and daughter-in-law law and four grandchildren in Rangeley whenever they could, until Fred passed away in 1991.

Being the independent soul that she was, Marjorie stayed alone on the farm until Tom and his wife moved there in 2010.

Marjorie continued to live on the farm with Tom and his wife. All four of her grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren live on family land nearby and would stop in on a regular basis to visit with her. She looked forward to going to church every Sunday and enjoying fellowship at Dunn’s Corner Baptist Church where she had been attending for over 60 years.

As long as the weather was nice, you could always see her outside. She may have been walking around the farm or just sitting in the warm sunshine, but she thrived on being outside. She would wave to everyone who passed by, and often commented on how, when she first moved to Mt. Vernon, the road was dirt and cars didn’t go by so fast! She loved to have folks stop in anytime to say “Hi” and her passion was to sit and talk with friends, and boy could she talk!

Marjorie was a real home body and although did some traveling, her desire was to always get back to her home in Mt. Vernon, where she has lived for the last 70 years. She describes Mt. Vernon as “Heaven on Earth!” and her hope was to live out her last days right here on the farm! Which she did!

She was predeceased by her parents; her husband, Fred; her son Mark, her daughter, Kathy; and her twin brother Harry.

She is survived by her son Tom and his wife Cathy of Mt. Vernon and their four children, Jesse and his wife Jen, Matt and his wife Jeanette; Rebecca and her husband Matt all of Mt. Vernon and Jana Drake and her husband Justin of Woolwich; her 10 great-grandkids, Eli, Gabe, Emmett, Sawyer and Addi Jacobs, Mark and Drew Sylvester and Marjorie, Jamison and Roger Drake; her sisters Ruth, Mary, Eleonor, Alice, and Linda and brothers John and Ernie; and many nieces and nephews.

The family would like to express deep appreciation for the wonderful care from Androscoggin Home Health and Hospice, especially the nurse, Susan and the kind, caring CNA’s such as Ashley.

A celebration of life will be held at the Dunn’s Corner Baptist Church in Mt. Vernon on Monday, Oct 18, 2021 at 11 a.m.
