I would like to start by thanking Taylor Abbott for her Oct. 15 story on the Skowhegan event which incorporated a celebration of life for Nico Lovell-Mahan and suicide awareness, “Death of Canaan teen by suicide leads to outpouring of support.” Abbott clearly put thought and research into her article. Her approach and her presence that evening are very much appreciated.

It’s difficult to incorporate everything and everyone into a story when there is limited space, thus my letter. The evening of Oct, 14 involved so many caring individuals. Dixie Ring, the Canaan Library director, was integral along in partnering with Jessica and me in making plans for this to be a particularly positive and loving event. We could not have done this without those who contributed to the silent auction or the Miller’s Table. Special thanks there to Amber, Kim, and Jess for your time, generosity, and patience.

Ralph Pillsbury offered his special and endearing touch in providing music which made the evening even more enjoyable. Mike Jones, an educator and civil rights team leader, was there as a liaison between Skowhegan Area High School, the graphics art department, emails, phone calls; whatever it took to create the success of this event. SAHS is most fortunate. Jeremy Bourque and his senior students created an amazing banner and memorial cards which added such a personal and loving touch.

I was particularly appreciative to have an administrator attend. Thank you, Bill Vigue. Your presence created hope for the road ahead.

Most especially, thank you to Jessica-Ann Mahan. You have delivered a great gift to your child, Nico. You are giving them a voice.

To witness community and school district come together on this date of celebration and awareness can give us pause to hope that we can move forward. Be the hope, be the change, be the one. Gratitude to all.
