WATERVILLE — The Alfond Youth & Community Center held its second annual “Friday Night Lights” Cornhole Tournament on Oct. 8.

This year’s event, organized by Wicked Cornhole and held at Purnell Wrigley Field, featured more than 60 teams and nearly 140 people from across the state. Players of all ages and abilities were guaranteed four games; the top 16 teams were put into a single elimination bracket until it came down to the winners. Cash prizes were awarded to the top three teams.

The first-place team winners were Drew Baker and Joel Small from Brewer; second place, Derek Lacadie and Roger Blackmer from Bangor; and third place, Mike Bonenfant and Bill Smith from Augusta.

The biggest victory of the night was $24,000 raised to help sustain the AYCC’s Unified Champion Club Program due to the growing and developing partnerships with Maine Masonic Charitable Foundation, Sukeforth Family Foundation and many other sponsors.

The Unified Champion Club is a program where adults with and without intellectual disabilities are paired and come together as one though the power of sports and other activities. The purpose is to create a culture of acceptance and social inclusion within the AYCC and the community for people of all abilities; the AYCC is the first club in the nation to offer such a program.
