Writer Barbara Walsh and artist Helene Farrar will sign copies of their new book “The Deer Man” from 2-5 p.m. on Nov. 6 at The Woodshed Taproom, 915 Western Ave. in Manchester, home of the Maine Cabin Masters.
“The Deer Man” is a heartwarming true story about Stephen Taubner and the forest family he loved and nourished for 15 years. Taubner lives in an old Maine farmhouse surrounded by woods and wildlife. One cold and snowy winter, he spotted two fawns and their mother.
The deer were too thin, and Taubner knew there was nothing left in the forest for them to eat. He fed the deer buckets of oats and befriended the large doe he called Big Momma. Every winter she returned, and many other deer joined her.
“It was my meditation when I sat with them as they fed,” Taubner said. “For many years, I watched the different generations of deer come and how they interacted with one another when they ate.”
The book, with its poignant story and stunning illustrations, is dedicated to all those who cherish nature and wildlife. Taubner hopes it will inspire people to appreciate the environment and “critters” large and small.
“The Deer Man” is Walsh’s fifth book. She has also written “August Gale: A Father and Daughter’s Journey into the Storm,” “The Goose Lady,” “Rhoda’s Rescue” and “Sammy in the Sky,” which is illustrated by Jamie Wyeth, as stated in a news release.
Farrar has taught and worked in the visual arts for 20 years while exhibiting in galleries throughout the U.S. and Europe. “The Deer Man” is her first children’s book.
