LEWISTON — The Maine Nordiques did not have tricks or treats for the home fans Saturday night at The Colisee.

The Jamestown Rebels defeated the Nordiques with two special-teams goals in a 4-0 win in a North American Hockey League East Division game.

Nordiques (5-8-1, 11 points) coach Nolan Howe is trying to figure out a way to stop the six-game losing streak the team is currently on.

“(The first period) was one of our better ones (lately), we came out of it tied (0-0), but at the end of the day, we didn’t get the job done,” Howe said.

Rebels (7-5-1, 15 points) coach Joe Coombs said he has five objectives for each game. While they didn’t meet all five adjectives Friday, Jamestown checked well, did well at the faceoff dot, odd-man rushes, and took no bad penalties.

“We are going home with four points and I didn’t think I’d be saying that this time of the year,” Coombs said. “Maybe after Christmas, but with this young group, it’s nice to accomplish this, this early (in the season).”

Nolan Suggs, making his second start of the weekend, stopped 27 shots for the shutout.

The Rebels took a 1-0 lead midway through the second period on an easy tap-in goal. Forward Marcus Kivela Carlzon put the puck on goal, forcing Maine Nordiques goalie Gus Holt (25 saves) to slide, but Holt made a kick save with his left leg. However, by making the save, Holt’s momentum slid him out of the crease, and Max Hanstad had the easy goal.

“(Holt) made the save he needed to make, but we had some guys who lost their net-front battle,” Howe said.

Maine had an opportunity to tie the game shortly thereafter when the Rebels took back-to-back penalties and the Nordiques had an extended 5-on-3 power play. Jamestown’s special teams were the ones to take advantage. On a shorthanded breakaway, Conor Sedlak’s wrist shot from the high slot put the Rebels up 2-0. It was Sedlak’s third goal of the weekend.

A 5-on-3 shorthanded goal is a rarity.

“Anytime you score (a shorthanded goal on a five-on-three power play), it can be a back-breaking goal,” Coombs said. “For us tonight, it went a long way. It’s a tough goal to give up, it’s a tough goal to get. I don’t remember the last time I have seen one. Know what? We got lucky. Their goalie, I thought (Holt) played really well, certainly for the first couple of periods.”

In the third period, Jamestown’s power play extended the lead. Jak Vaarwerk found Mitch Lafay in the left circle, and Lafay’s shot beat Holt through the five-hole nearly seven minutes into the third period.

The Rebels were 1-for-3 on the man advantage while the Nordiques went 0-for-6.

Roux Bazin extended the Rebels’ lead with seven minutes remaining in the third period. Twin City Thunder draft pick Owen Simmons recorded his first assist with the Rebels. He joined Jamestown on Oct. 16 after starting the season with the Estevan Bruins of the Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League. He also attended the Blainville-Boisbriand Armada’s (QMJHL) training camp this summer.

Maine travels to Maryland to take on the Black Bears next Friday at 7:30 p.m. and Saturday at 7 p.m.
