FAIRFIELD — A man and woman were injured Monday morning when a driver was blinded by the sun and attempted to make a left turn in front of a logging truck on Norridgewock Road, according to the Fairfield Police Department.
Frederick Gonyer, 31, of Dummer, New Hampshire, was driving north on Norridgewock Road, also state Route 139, while hauling logs in a tractor-trailer. At the same time, Thomas Scholtens, 63, of Fairfield was at the intersection, attempting to make a left turn from Middle Road, also state Route 104, onto Norridgewock Road, when he pulled out in front of Gonyer’s truck.
Fairfield police responded about 10:30 a.m. to the intersection of Norridgewock Road and Middle Road, according to information provided by Public Information Officer Casey Dugas.
Scholtens later told Fairfield police he was blinded by the sun and did not see the tractor-trailer while making the turn.
Gonyer attempted to avoid the vehicle but hit Scholtens’ SUV before going off the road. The tractor-trailer came to a stop on the lawn of the former Melody Ranch at 404 Norridgewock Road.
Scholtens’ SUV was pushed to the right during the crash, hitting a minivan driven by Jill Lattin, 68, of New Portland.
Scholtens and his passenger, Cynthia Sawtelle, 59, of Fairfield, were injured and taken by ambulance to MaineGeneral Medical Center’s Thayer Center for Health in Waterville.

Scholtens was listed in stable condition and Sawtelle in critical condition Monday afternoon, according to Dugas.
No others were injured, Dugas said, and no charges were pending.
