Donald Jean

AUGUSTA – Donald Jean, 93, of Gray Birch Drive and formerly a longtime resident of Washington Street Place, died Oct. 30, 2021 at MaineGeneral Rehabilitation and Nursing Care at Gray Birch Drive after an extended illness.

He was born in Augusta on Oct. 26, 1928, the son of Antoine Jean and Irene (Couture) Jean.

Prior to his retirement, he was employed by Carlton Woolen Mills for several years. He was previously employed by Bates Manufacturing Co. – Edwards Division for 37 years.

Mr. Jean was a member of St. Michael Parish at St. Augustine Catholic Church, and a former member of Abnaki Council Knights of Columbus.

Donald and his wife Lucille enjoyed many winters in Zephyrhills, Fla. where he enjoyed playing shuffleboard, riding bikes and visiting the Disney parks with his brother Midget and Rita and many of their friends. Dad was an active card player, he enjoyed making jigsaw puzzles and he truly enjoyed his many daily cups of coffee. He was a man who always put his family’s needs first.

He was predeceased by his parents; one daughter, Carol Hathaway; his sisters Diana Duplessis, Leona Fletcher, Juliette Jean, Ida Brochu, Patricia Poulin, and Theresa Giroux, his brothers Leo Jean, Roland Jean, Arthur (Midget) Jean and Richard Jean.

Surviving is his loving wife of 71 years, Lucille (Busque) Jean of Augusta; three daughters, Donna Cummings of Augusta, Dolores Nicknair and her husband Richard of Augusta, Constance Lachance and her husband Paul of Augusta, a son, Ronald R. Jean and his wife Cathy of Groton, Conn..; two sisters, Joan Talbot of Augusta and Grace Bumford of Sidney.

Donald had seven grandchildren, Jason Hathaway and his partner Tracy Beaulieu of Augusta, Jeremy Hathaway of Augusta, Michael Nicknair of Augusta, Jeff Nicknair and his wife Veronica of Augusta, Cheryl Brigham and her husband Peter of West Gardiner, Amy Paulette and her fiancé Jimmy Lemelin of Belgrade and Christopher Jean and his wife Melissa of Ledyard, Conn. He had seven great-grandchildren, Tyler and Ashlee Hathaway, Chandler and Myles Nicknair, Callaway and Gabriel Brigham and Orion James Paulette.

Per his request, there are no public visiting hours scheduled. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Friday Nov. 5 at St. Augustine Catholic Church. Burial will follow in Holy Family Cemetery, Augusta.

The family would like to thank all of the staff at Gray Birch for the excellent care and compassion they gave our Dad.
