Marilyn Hafford

GREENE – Marilyn Hafford, 99, born July 17, 1922 in Sydney, went to be with her Lord on Oct. 29, 2021. She was surrounded by her family at home. She will be greatly missed by her family, her beloved harness racing family, and many friends.

In her some 36,000 days on earth she was an amazing woman. She had a passion for life, could dance with the best of them, and shared her fashion style, living on the edge, and spontaneous nature with many generations of her family.

She is survived by her children Charles Manter, Paula Hook, Ruth Jewell, Richard Pullen, Linda Gordon, Penny Bubier, and Vernan Childs.

She is also survived by over 30 grandchildren; an abundance of fourth and fifth generation grandchildren; nieces and nephews; and dear friends Joyce Bubier, Jean Mower, and Mary Sanford.

She was preceded in death by her beloved husband of 54 years, Ronald “Rosie” Hafford; her parents Ralph and Jeanette Ballard; and her siblings Millard and Ruth Ballard.

She was so proud of the rich Ballard family history, including Maine’s own historic midwife, Martha Ballard.

Marilyn and Ronald were lifetime participants of the Maine Harness Racing Community and worked for many different owners and trainers over the years as well as having their own stable. She held many different positions at Lewiston Raceway and especially enjoyed all the annual Horsemens’ Banquets. Late in life she loved to share photos of win pictures from all around the state and she keenly recalled the minute details of each win.

Memorials may be made to Androscoggin Home Healthcare Hospice or Maine Harness Horse Association Scholarships.
