WAYNE – Nan D. Lincoln, 88, of Wayne, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, Oct. 20, 2021, at the MaineGeneral Medical Center in Augusta following a short illness. Our sorrow is turned to hope because of the assurance of Nan’s testimony. Nan had an unwavering faith of her home in heaven because of her trust in her Saviour.Nan was born in Turner on Feb. 13, 1933, the daughter of Harold and Flora DeCoster. Nan attended school in Turner and graduated from Leavitt High School. Following high school, Nan worked for B. Peck Company, popularly known as “The Great Department Store” in Lewiston, Maine, for seven years. Founded in 1880 by businessman Bradford Peck, the four-story Peck’s Department Store – complete with elevator operators – stood out as something very special in the area, especially at Christmas time when generations of kids flocked to the store’s basement to see the area’s only department store Santa. Countless childhood memories were made at Peck’s during this magical Christmas season. For many local residents, Peck’s meant love, kindness, goodness, tenderness and nice people. Nan fit very well into this environment as she embodied all of these qualities herself, and contributed to the atmosphere for which Peck’s is so fondly remembered today.One day while Nan was working at Peck’s at Christmas, a young man came into the store looking for nylon stockings for his mother. Nan assisted with finding the perfect pair of stockings for her client, and the young man was grateful. Following this initial encounter, the young man returned to the store every week so that he could continue speaking with Nan. He eventually asked her out on a date and a courtship began. Nan and Richard Lincoln were married in Turner on September 19th, 1959, and then Nan moved to Wayne where she lived a long, wonderful life with Richard, raised two devoted daughters, and actively contributed to her beloved community in numerous ways. Nan was a faithful member of the Wayne Community Church for over 60 years. She served on the Worship Committee for 15 years, and regularly participated in Bible study groups. Nan was also a long time member of many community based groups, including the former Ladies’ Aid, Minta Class, Co-operative Extension, American Field Service (AFS) and Senior Luncheon committee. She belonged to the Wayne Historical Society, the New Sandwich Quilters, Friday and Garden Clubs. Nan was an excellent cook, and provided delicious pies, cakes, cookies and other treats over many decades to bake sale fundraisers for the church, library, school and other community projects. She also volunteered at the former Augusta General Hospital coffee shop for several years and worked on a part-time basis for Promotional Advertising conducting food demonstrations in local stores and introducing the public to new products. Nan was the ultimate homemaker, taking pride in preparing lovely meals for family and friends, and making every holiday and birthday a special celebration. She was a loving wife, devoted mother and caring friend. She will be cherished always. Nan was predeceased by her husband of 58 years, Richard Lincoln; a sister, Betty (DeCoster) Gibbs, and brother-in-law, Melvin Gibbs. She is survived by her two loving and devoted daughters, Elaine Lincoln and her partner, Michael Garner, of Wayne and Lisa Lincoln, also of Wayne; her two brothers, Jack DeCoster, and his wife, Patricia, of Turner and Roger DeCoster, and his wife, Melina, of Turner; six nieces and seven nephews. A memorial service will be held at the Wayne Community Church on Saturday, November 13, at 1 p.m. Nan’s family respectively requests that attendees wear a mask.Arrangements are in the care of Roberts Funeral Home and Cremation Care, 62 Bowdoin Street, Winthrop.
