Daniel Ervin Leighton

MT. VERNON – Daniel Ervin Leighton, 60, passed away with his daughter and one of his sisters by his side on Sunday, Oct. 31, 2021, following a brief illness.Daniel was born to Ervin W. Leighton and June (White) Leighton of Mt. Vernon, the baby of their four children. He attended Mt. Vernon and Winthrop schools before being in one of the first classes to graduate from Maranacook Community School in 1979.His strong work ethic was instilled at a very young age by his father. Starting a newspaper delivery route, buying a bike with money he had earned and saved. Throughout high school Dan was employed for Clark Marine in Belgrade where he also took on odd jobs caring for seasonal properties. He eventually found his calling in the carpentry world. Alongside Bill Logan and Scot Jalbert, Dan built himself a reputation of hard work and excellence through Brookewood Builders in Manchester. This is where he was teaching his son-in-law everything he knows so that one day he could carry on the “Leighton Legacy” as he called it.Dan was a kind-hearted always willing to help, fair, honest, genuine man who never accepted the difference between workdays and weekends. He put his heart, soul, and every curse word you could think of into everything he did. Many times, making lifelong friends long after his “job” was complete. Dan took pride in caring for people, especially his mother June Leighton, his daughter Lora Pinkham, and his son-in-law Scott Pinkham. But he took the most pride in his three grandchildren: Zakary Pinkham, Kyleigh Pinkham and Emrie Pinkham, all of whom he is survived by. He would often bring over giant sheets of bubble wrap for them to pop and big boxes to play in, he never missed a ‘first day of school’ picture, was often on the sidelines of sporting events, spent every holiday with them and he joined them on an annual walk of the Rockland Breakwater every October.Daniel is also survived by his sisters; Nancy Dunn and her husband Lee Dunn, Judith Dunn, and her husband Dana Dunn. His many nieces and nephews; Suzanne Leighton and her husband Darren, Tony Dunn and Amanda Mills, Jed Dunn and his wife Gina, Eric Dunn and his wife Abby, Curt Dunn and Tammy Olson, Matt Dunn and his wife Cathy and Maryann Coakley and her husband Joe. Along with multiple great-nieces and nephews who lovingly referred to Daniel as “Uncle Dan”.Daniel was predeceased by his father Ervin “Tunny” Leighton, his brother Francis Leighton, both of which he missed greatly and a great-nephew Michael Dunn.A graveside service will be held at 1 p.m., on Sunday, Nov. 14, 2021, at Stevens Cemetery, North Road in Mt. Vernon, followed by a celebration of life location to be determined.
