Mary Frances Bartlett

AUGUSTA – It is with great sorrow that we announce the passing of Mary Frances Bartlett, 88, on November 1, 2021 after a severe stroke. She was born May 25, 1933 in Dixfield, Maine to Leola and Arthur Brown Sr. She married Richard Bartlett in December of 1952, who preceded her in death in 1987.

Predeceased by her daughter Janice B. Merrill, sister Grace Hillman and brother Arthur Brown Jr.

Mary Frances Bartlett has a long municipal career that began in the Town of Dixfield in 1954. She became welfare director in Augusta in 1984, As welfare director in Augusta was the recipient of MMA’s prestigious Ethel Kelley Memorial Award, presented to her during the MMA Annual Banquet on October 8, 2008. The award recognizes dedication to the cause of good local government including such attributes as selfless concern for people, demonstrated capability, efficiency and willingness to hold an organization together, as well as conscientious service and longevity. Mary also had an honorary membership with Maine Welfare Directors Association (MWDA) in very recent years. . She partially retired in 2009 and worked part time as Augusta’s health officer. She fully retired in August of 2020.

Mary Frances was a wonderful mother and grandmother and will be greatly missed. She was a great cook and often fed an army of friends and family at the family camp. She also enjoyed baking and always had baked goods for the different committee meetings she ran or participated in.

She is survived by her son and wife Michael and Cindy Bartlett, son Dana Bartlett, two nieces, seven grandchildren, four great grandchildren, one great-great grandchild and her “demanding” cat, Tippy.

A Celebration of Mary Frances’ life will be held at the Buker Community Center, 22 Armory St., Augusta Maine on November 20, 2021 from 12-3 p.m.
