STRONG — Michelle Tranten, the controversial principal at Mt. Abram Regional High School, is expected to resign at the end of next week, school officials confirmed on Friday.

Tranten, principal of the school since 2015, had been the target of a “no confidence” vote reportedly signed by half of the student body earlier this month. She had been the subject of a similar “no confidence” effort among faculty last year.

Over the past few days, the Maine School Administrative District 58 board of directors met to discuss the issues with Tranten and then announced that they had reached an agreement with the beleaguered principal.

According to Todd Sanders, superintendent of schools, Tranten and the board, “have reached a mutual agreement that includes her resignation. It is anticipated that the resignation will be effective at the end of next week.”

Sanders said no other comment on the matter would be forthcoming, “except to say that the board and myself are committed to ensuring the success of our students and to minimize any impact the principal’s departure will have on our operations.”

Tranten came to the Mt. Abram school as principal after working for five years as assistant principal at a Florida school.

In their “no confidence” petition, students complained that Tranten did not maintain a relationship with students of the school and blamed her for the loss of several teachers and other staff members who have left their positions.

There was no word from the school system on who will replace Tranten once her resignation becomes official.
