We live in a nation of political and civil unrest. Newspapers are filled with articles reporting the lack of respect citizens have for law enforcement, along with outlandish requests for defunding of these organizations, and now reductions in workforce due to mandated vaccination policies.

I, for one, am grateful to these professional men and women, and here’s why.

As most women can relate, my husband of 50-plus years sets aside about 10 days a year to go to hunting camp. We both look forward to this time; I enjoy the solitude, and he looks forward to commiserating with his friends. We’ve always felt that our security system provided that extra level of security for both of us and our families while he’s gone.

Late one night, heavy wind gusts and rain caused an improperly latched door in our home to open, activating the alarm system. Within seconds I was contacted by our security company advising that local authorities had been notified and would respond immediately.

Imagine my relief when I saw the police car arrive, and an officer with a flashlight start a perimeter check of the windows and doors of our house to assure there was no evidence of tampering.

When the officer came to my door he reassured me that there was no further need for concern. It was raining, and he was drenched. He proudly smiled at me and told me that I could call him anytime I felt the need, and left. I am so thankful for all law enforcement personnel, especially those of the Waterville Police Department.

I never asked the officer’s name. I hope he reads this and realizes how comforting it was to have his help that night. He is my hero!
