Stephen “Steve” Sewell Shepherd

HALLOWELL – Stephen “Steve” Sewell Shepherd, lifelong resident of Hallowell, Maine, left this earth for his heavenly home on Nov. 14, 2021, from Captain Lewis Assisted Living facility in Farmingdale.
He was born on July 20, 1932, the son of Cedric and Barbara Shepherd. He was a graduate of Hallowell High School, class of 1951, where he participated in a variety of sports, and for many years, he and Kay hosted high school reunions at their home on Mayflower Road.
Steve married his wife Kay, (Therrien), on Feb. 4, 1950, and they remained together as husband and wife until her passing on Oct. 25, 2019, just shy of their 70th Anniversary.
Steve was a man of many talents, and from his teen years until his mid 40s, worked in the family construction business (Shepherd Brothers) a company started by his uncle, Bob, and father, Cedric. Their projects ranged from the development of Mayflower Road in the 1950s, to major pipelines in the next decades, throughout the state of Maine, as cities and towns began to build sewage treatment plants. Incorporating his experience from these endeavors, Steve went to work for the Augusta Sanitary District where he worked from 1975 until his retirement in 1994.
Several years prior to his retirement, Steve and his youngest son, Terry, began S. Shepherd and Son Construction company, and specialized in a variety of endeavors, from home building, site preparation, and snow removal. In addition to all of this, Steve and Kay contracted with the United States Postal Service for 58 years to deliver mail to and from the more rural communities in the Augusta area.
In addition to his career, Steve served for many years as a volunteer fireman and every briefly as the fire chief of the Hallowell Fire Department. He and Kay enjoyed vacationing annually at their time share in St. Maartens, where they became involved in community service, and made lifelong friends. Steve and Kay were active members of Lighthouse Baptist Church.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Cedric and Barbara Shepherd and his sisters, Gail Shepherd, and Linda Gilson.

He is survived by his sons, Dennie (Emily), Ron (Sue), and Terry (Brenda) Shepherd, as well as grandchildren, Kate Morris, Rebecca Cain, Ben Shepherd, David Shepherd, Sarah Brock, Abby Hutchins, Jordyn Barrett, and Keith Sleeper, and great grandchildren, Claire, Lincoln, and Johnny Shepherd, Cason Cain, Brooklyn, Aubrey, Tyler, Henry, and Sadie Morris, Zoey and Maisie Barrett, and Caden Sleeper.

The family wishes to express their thanks for the wonderful care that Steve received from the staff of Captain Lewis Assisted Living during the last months of his life. A celebration of life will be scheduled in the summer of next year.
