WATERVILLE – Paul L. Morrissette, 74, of Winslow passed away unexpectedly on Friday, Nov. 26, 2021 at MaineGeneral Medical Center Alfond Center for Health in Augusta, with his family by his side. Paul was born on Feb. 16, 1947, to parents, Lucien J. and Gloria H. Morrissette completing their family of two sons.

After graduating from Winslow High School in 1966, Paul served our country by enlisting in the United States Navy and was assigned to the USS Joseph K. Taussig during the Vietnam War. Upon receiving an honorable discharge, Paul returned home and swiftly gained employment with Scott Paper Company. His call to return to service led him to enter the police academy where he began his career in law enforcement. Paul served the City of Waterville as a patrolman for 25 years. He “walked the beat” for many years in the downtown business district getting to know local shop owners and checking in on them daily. During this time, he also taught drivers’ education with Elm City Driving School teaching both the young and the young hearted.

After his retirement from the Waterville Police Department, Paul’s call to service led him back to his hometown of Winslow where he joined the Winslow Police Department becoming its Field Training Officer and later promotion to Sergeant. Throughout his 18 year career with the Winslow P.D., he mentored many young officers, some becoming more like family rather than colleagues. Paul taught these recruits that police were there to serve their community and that compassion, empathy, and respect were important tools each officer must carry each day.

After his departure from police work, Paul’s admirable work ethic led him to MaineGeneral Medical Center where he worked as a security guard, then dispatcher. Even on his last day on earth, Paul reported for work. His family was always encouraging him to retire, but Paul would not agree stating that he enjoyed his daily interactions with his colleagues. His military background was still prevalent as he answered dispatch calls with a professional greeting of sir or ma’am to each caller.

Paul’s quick and quirky sense of humor was his true charm. He always had a funny joke or riddle to share. He also liked to give financial advice by telling people “not to take any wooden nickels.” His joy and his hobby were spending time with his family including his beloved dog Jack, and granddogs, Gabe, Lilli, Kalley, and Lady. Paul’s quiet generosity touched many lives. He was humble and never wanted public credit for any of the kind and thoughtful things he did.

Paul was predeceased by his parents, and brother, James. He is survived by his fiancé, Marge Nadeau; his daughter, Tanya Verzoni and son-in-law, Chris Verzoni; his fiancé’s children, Ben Nadeau, Joe Grenier and his daughter, “baby Joey”, and Ken “Bub” Nadeau and his wife Vanessa, and their children, Trafton and McKenna. He is also survived by several nieces, nephews, cousins, and special friends.

The family wishes to express their gratitude to the staff at MaineGeneral’s emergency room especially Dr. Giles Gifford and a special nurse Jaron Avance. Their compassion, empathy, and professionalism were greatly appreciated at such a difficult time.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. on Monday Dec. 6, 2021 at St. John the Baptist Church 26 Monument Street, Winslow. A private graveside burial at St. Francis Cemetery will be for family and invited guests only.
