Alfred M. Carpenter

SKOWHEGAN – Alfred M. Carpenter, 95, of Skowhegan, passed away on Dec. 8, 2021, at home with family by his side.

He was born in Solon on Nov. 8, 1926, a son of the late Joseph and Gertrude (Gordon) Carpenter. In 1952 he married Muriel Fentiman and together they raised their young family in the Skowhegan area.

Alfred worked most of his life at Henry’s Hardware and Blake’s Hardware. He also owned and operated Al’s Toppers Truck and Camper Sales.

Alfred was also a very active member of The Skowhegan-Madison Elks Lodge. He served as The Exalted Ruler in 1995 and 2000. He was honored as officer of the year in 1993, Elk of the year in 1996, The Elks Lodge Father of The Year in 2015 and was an Honorary Life Member.

Alfred and Muriel loved to travel, mostly to visit family members. He was a craftsman who had very good carpentry skills and enjoyed creating and building things. In their earlier years, they enjoyed camping with family at the Abnaki Campground in Madison.

Alfred is survived by four children, Patricia Bowditch and her husband Terry of the Hilton Head area, S.C., Cheryl LeClair and her husband Denny of Skowhegan, James Carpenter of Flagstaff, Ariz., and Michael Carpenter of Jonesborough, Tenn.; grandchildren: Tiffany LeClair Poulin and her husband Travis of Canaan, Alicia Carpenter of Johnson City, Tenn., Kevin Nelen of Vero Beach, Fla.; great-grandchildren Hailey, Saige and Hunter Poulin, Chloe, Aiden and Alexis Nelen; and several nieces and nephews.

Besides his parents, Alfred was predeceased by his wife of 62 years, Muriel; and by a grandson, Gary M. LeClair.

Visitation will be held at Smart and Edwards Funeral Home on Thursday Dec. 16 from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Funeral services will be held at the funeral home on Friday Dec. 17 at 11 a.m. A Celebration of life will be held Friday at 4 p.m. at The Skowhegan-Madison Elks Lodge. Committal services will be held in the spring in North Anson.
