I have been confused, frustrated and alarmed at some of the response to Congressman Jared Golden’s principled position on the Build Back Better bill in the House. Confused because we elected him to be a thoughtful and considerate representative of the 2nd District, but now the expectation is for him to tow the party line when the party line means tax giveaways to the wealthy.

Frustrated because he is standing up for working-class Mainers, fighting like we sent him to D.C. to do, and people call it political grandstanding.

The line, in this case, is an expensive and unnecessary tax giveaway to the wealthy. Something which both Rep. Golden and Sen. Bernie Sanders oppose. Many of my friends and family, mostly moderates, also oppose this tax giveaway to the wealthiest Americans in wealthy states.

Though the response to his opposition leaves me confused, frustrated and alarmed, Rep. Golden’s thoughtful and clear explanations of his position on BBB give me confidence in his ability to represent us. And for that reason, and many others, he can be confident in my vote for his re-election in 2022.
