After much consideration, I came to the decision that the article written about the status of the proposed Skowhegan Public Safety Building cannot be left uncorrected “Skowhegan officials looking for ways to lower construction costs for new public safety building,” Dec. 9). Those who are informed know that Sheridan did, in fact, supply the Town Building Committee with suggested alternates which would have reduced the cost of the building as designed.

Sheridan has provided design and construction services in Maine for almost 75 years. We employ many people in the central Maine area and have a strong philosophy of providing high-quality results and responsible bidding. The design of this project brought much concern for our estimators, which resulted in Sheridan providing solutions to those problems within our bid price. Sheridan did not provide a “non-responsive bid”; we provided a responsible bid for our neighboring community.

We sincerely hope that the town can see a way to construct a much-needed public safety building. Unfortunately, the facility that was presented to the bidding contractors cannot be shoehorned into the town’s budget without significant changes in design and quality.
