LITCHFIELD – Linda M. Averill, 72, of Litchfield, Maine, died unexpectedly on Thursday, Dec. 23, 2021, at her home with her husband by her side.She was born in Camden, Maine on July 31, 1949, the daughter of Ivan and Ruth (Hersey) Carter. Linda attended Searsport High School and earned her associates degree from USM. She worked in the schools and group homes as a behavioral specialist. Linda enjoyed cooking, building, quilting, kayaking, and hiking the Appalachian Trail. She supported her sons’ racing team Twin Motorsports for many years. Linda enjoyed watching her niece, Allison, play basketball for Bowdoin College and most recently as she coaches at Bates College. She went on several of these trips with her granddaughter. She also loved attending her grandchildren’s sporting events and was known for making dishes for football and lacrosse team suppers. Linda loved spending time with her family at their camp in Upper Enchanted and taking their boat, the Angus W. to their ocean cottage, the Binnacle, on Matinicus Island. She and her husband recently bought a home in Florida where she enjoyed spending the winters. Linda’s great granddaughter, Josie, was the love of her life and she brightened her days. Terry and Linda would have celebrated their 56th wedding Anniversary on Dec. 27, 2021. Linda is survived by her husband, Terry Averill and their dog Piper of Litchfield; her mother Ruth (Hersey) Carter of Scarborough; twin sons Mark Averill and Kelly Pelletier, and Doug Averill and his wife Danielle of Litchfield. She is also survived by her four grandchildren, Matthew Averill and his wife Hannah, Kelsey Averill and Gage Pessant, Jonathan Averill and his fiance Renee Cote, Austin Averill, her great granddaughter Josie Averill and a great grandson who is due in March. She is also survived by her brother Michael Carter and his wife Wendy, her sister Patti Lowell and her husband Jim and several nieces and nephews. Linda was predeceased by her father Ivan Carter and wife Ellie, stepfather John Burke, and grandmother Sadie May Hersey. There will be a celebration of Linda’s life at a later date in the Spring at Matinicus Island and Litchfield Plains Cemetery.
