AUGUSTA – Leroy “Roy” Fogg Hussey, 97, passed away on Sunday Jan. 2, 2022, in Augusta, Maine. He was a lifelong resident of Augusta, and summer resident of Ocean Point, East Boothbay.

He was born in Augusta, on Dec. 28, 1924, the son of Leroy Hussey Sr. and Ruth (Vickery) Hussey.He attended Williams School and graduated from Cony High School in 1943.

In June 1943, he was inducted into the U. S. Army, serving with the 258th in General Patton’s 3rd Army. He took part in the Normandy invasion (Utah Beach D-Day +6) in June 1944, the Battle of the Bulge in Belgium Dec. 1944, across Germany, and when the war ended in Europe, into Pilson, Czechoslovakia.

On Aug. 23, 1947, he married his high school sweetheart, Marian Littlefield, in Augusta. They celebrated their 71st wedding anniversary in August 2018, just before her passing.

Leroy received a B.S. degree from Boston University in August 1948 and then joined the family business, Hussey Hardware, where he became President and CEO until his retirement in 1992.

He was a Past Potentate of the Kora Shrine 1972, Past President of Augusta Jaycees 1952-1953, Past President of the Augusta Merchants Association, former board member of the Maine Merchants Association, Director of the Augusta YMCA from 1960-1972, Past President of the Augusta Kiwanis Club 1964, life member of Post 2 American Legion, life member of the Kennebec Historical Society and life member of Bethlehem Lodge AF and AM #35, Scottish Rite and York Rite Bodies. He was an Eagle Scout, and then served as Boy Scout leader of Troop 176 from 1948 to 1963 and as a sponsor representative with Troop 684 until 2006.

He served two terms as trustee of South Parish Congregational Church, three years as chairman.

Throughout his life, being at Ocean Point in the summers was important to him. He spent much time there as a child at cottages owned by both his paternal and maternal grandparents. Then later, he loved spending time there with Marian and their family: special family barbecues, playing golf with his grandsons, watching his favorite Boston Red Sox at Fenway Park or on TV, numerous games of cribbage, and watching the sunset over Linekin Bay.

Leroy was predeceased by his wife Marian Littlefield Hussey in 2018 and his son Robert L. Hussey in 2003.

Surviving are his daughter Ann Hussey Hogaboom (Richard) of Hopkinton, Mass., and his son Richard Hussey (Eileen) of East Winthrop. He is also survived by a daughter-in-law Mimi Hussey of Rockport.

He leaves eight grandchildren: Sarah Hussey Chowgule (Nikhilesh) of Cary, N.C., Aaron Hussey of Augusta, Sarah Gagne (Michael) of Rockport, Scott Hogaboom of Greenville, R.I., Brendan Hogaboom of Chicago, Ill, Zachary Hussey of Rockport, Luke Hussey of East Winthrop, and Anna Hussey of East Winthrop and two great grandchildren, Charlize Chowgule of Cary, N.C. and Malcolm Gagne of Rockport. He is also survived by two nieces, Susan Flanders (William) of West Gardiner and Cindy Fylsta (Tom) of Chelsea, a nephew, William Sprague Jr. ( Lesley) of Manchester, and his brother-in-law, William Sprague Sr. of Boothbay Harbor.

There will be no public funeral or visiting hours. A private graveside service will be held at Forest Grove Cemetery, Augusta, in spring of 2022.
