Ann Catherine (Demuth) Bailey

CANAAN – Ann Catherine (Demuth) Bailey, 79, passed away January 10, 2022 at Northern Light Eastern Maine Medical Center in Bangor. She was born April 20, 1942 in Appleton, the daughter of Charles F. and Esther (Stickney) Demuth.

She attended school in Appleton and graduated from high school in 1960. Her first job was at the Coast Guard Restaurant in Rockand when she was a teenager. She moved to Canaan in the mid-70s and ran the Oak Pond Restaurant, then she worked as a waitress, cook and baker at the Purple Cow Restaurant. After the Purple Cow, she spent time at The Eating House as a baker. She ended her working career at the Canaan Elementary School in food service for 13 years. She licensed her home and sold homemade pies for 2 years after having a back injury.

Ann enjoyed being with the Red Hat group until her stroke when she couldn’t get around any longer. She loved her yearly lunches with the “Appleton Girls”. She published a cookbook in 2016, after years of having all of her own recipes in her head, she wanted to share them. Her flowers!! If she wasn’t baking, she could be found in her flower gardens. She enjoyed endless rides with Stan, going out to eat, the past years she has been introduced to Netflix, where she would often tell her daughter which show to look up. Ann enjoyed time spent with children and grandchildren, loved her cat, Fudge, making sure to let people know he is not as sweet as his name!

She often said, “I also had another passion, that was my serenity, working in my yard raising flowers. When I wasn’t baking, I could be found digging in the dirt. So, I had the best of two worlds, smelling the aroma of an apple pies baking, and taking the time to smell the roses.”

Ann is survived by husband, Stanley Atwood Jr of Canaan; son, Mike Bailey and girlfriend Kayla of Smithfield; daughter, Gina Bailey of Canaan; grandchildren, Shyan, Jade, Brik, Josey, Cory and wife Courtney, Kasi and fiancé Branin, Kalli and fiancé Christopher, Caleb, Noah, Owen, Zeke; great grandchildren, Kaiden, Clark, Jayce, Avrie; sister, Jackie Gushee; special “sisters”, Gloria Bonin, Sylvia Dakin, Dawn Maclead, Rhonda Stark, Laurie Hall; many nieces and nephews.
