AUGUSTA — No one was injured after the Augusta Fire Department responded to a residential fire on Sunday afternoon, officials said.

Authorities said the cause of the fire was unknown and will be under investigation by the Office of State Fire Marshal.

The Augusta Fire Department was called at approximately 12:15 p.m. Sunday to 65 Washington St., where they battled the blaze at a single-family home for three hours, Chief Dave Groder said.

Groder said the units arrived on the scene to smoke and fire showing and requested a second alarm for mutual aid.

The three occupants of the home and their pet snake made it out safely; however, their cat died in the fire. The house was completely gutted by the fire, Groder said. The Red Cross has been notified to help them find temporary housing.

The residents said the fire erupted in the stove of the two-story house and quickly spread through the kitchen, though fire investigators had not yet given a cause for the fire by Sunday afternoon.

The fire marshal will be taking a look at the scene in the morning to assist with determining the cause due to extent of damage.
