Joan Virginia (White) Wight

LIVERMORE FALLS – Joan Virginia (White) Wight, 85, died Wednesday, Jan. 19, 2022 with her daughter by her side, at MaineGeneral Medical Center Alfond Center for Health after a brief illness.

Joan was born Feb. 27, 1936 in Mt. Vernon, the daughter of Waldo and Lora (Gordon) White. Joan graduated from Kents Hill Preparatory School in 1954.

She married Arthur ‘Bruz’ Wight August 5, 1956. Her children, Scott and Colette, arrived in the ‘60s. A daughter-in-law, Jamela, joined the family in the ‘80s, a grandson, Hadji, in the ‘90s, and a great-grandson, Kaizik, in the new millennium.

She was a ‘Joan of all trades’, from the blueberry fields to the apple orchards, from caregiving to proper housekeeping, from office work to small business owner to roofer and painter with her brothers, she did it all.

A woman of many interests and talents, she was mighty, crafty, clever, and capable. From driving her father’s bucket loader to shoveling her roof to stacking her wood to feeding her birds; from her tole painting and woodworking days with one brother to her music making days with her other brother and their mother. She bowled, skied, ‘ski-dooed’, played cribbage, knitted, baked, drank cocoa (not coffee), drove her truck with her tunes playing, loved to fly, camp, and explore every brook, pond, river, and ocean where she could catch a trout, striper, blue, or salmon. Joan’s love of fishing is a legacy that is continued by her son, grandson, and great grandson in their home state of Alaska.

Joan was predeceased by her parents; husband; in-laws Donald and Freda (Foss) Wight; sisters Evelyn ‘En’ / Arthur ‘Artie’ McCann, Marion / Merle Goucher; brothers-in-law Milton Hill, Ervin ‘Tunny’ Leighton; and many other beloved family members, friends, and neighbors.

She is survived by her children and family: sisters June Leighton, Bessie Hill; brothers Gary / Marjorie White, Theron / Kim White; sisters-in-law Beverly Wight-Smith, Marjorie / William ‘Bill’ Farrand; and all of their families.

The family is forever grateful for the care and compassion shown by those involved in Joan’s final days. All are very much appreciated.

Graveside services will be held at 12 pm, Friday, August 5, 2022 at the Maine Veterans’ Memorial Cemetery, Civic Center Drive, Augusta, with reception to follow at the Elks Lodge, 397 Civic Center Drive, Augusta.

Arrangements are in the care of the Roberts Funeral Home, 62 Bowdoin St. Winthrop, where condolences, memories, and photos may be shared with the family on the obituary page of the website at http://www.familyfirstfuneralhomes.com
