BANGOR — The University of Maine held Vermont to 24 percent shooting and a scoreless third quarter on the way to a 58-37 women’s basketball victory Sunday at Cross Insurance Center.

The Black Bears (8-10, 5-3 America East) allowed their fewest points since a 69-36 win over Maryland-Baltimore County in January 2018. Maine led 14-5 after one quarter, 36-20 at halftime and 52-20 after three quarters.

Anne Simon paced Maine with 15 points, Caroline Bornemann scored 13 and Anna Orois had 11.

Emma Utterbeck led Vermont (11-9, 5-4) with 11 points.

UNE 86, NICHOLS 52: The Nor’easters (10-8, 8-3 Commonwealth Coast) opened the game with a 23-4 run and cruised past the Bison (7-10, 3-7) in Biddeford.

Five players scored in double figures for UNE, led by Jordyn Franzen with 16 and Kaylee Beyor with 15. Allie Goodman had 14 points, 11 rebounds and five assists, and Abby Cavallaro finished with 13 points, 10 assists and six rebounds.

Abrianna Vazquez of Nichols scored 20 points.

TUFTS 89, COLBY 75: Annika Decker led the Jumbos (15-2, 5-1 NESCAC) with 18 points in a win over the Mules (9-6, 1-5) at Medford, Massachusetts.

Caroline Smith scored a career-high 25 points off the bench for Colby. Chiamaka Ubani added 14, Carly Christofori had 13 and Keagan Dunbar 11.

(1) SOUTH CAROLINA 62, FLORIDA 50: Aliyah Boston had 13 points and a season-high 19 rebounds for her 14th consecutive double-double, and the top-ranked Gamecocks (20-1, 8-1 SEC) beat the Gators (15-6, 5-3) in Gainesville, Florida to extend their winning streak to eight.

Zia Cooke added 11 points for the Gamecocks, who won their 14th in a row against the Gators.

(2) STANFORD 75, (8) ARIZONA 69: Cameron Brink dominated in the paint on both ends of the court and finished with 25 points, 15 rebounds and three blocked shots, leading the Cardinal (16-3, 7-0 Pac-12) past the Wildcats (15-3, 5-3) in a rematch of last year’s NCAA title game.

Sophomore Jana Van Gytenbeek came off the bench and contributed career-bests of six 3-pointers and 18 points for Stanford, the defending NCAA champion.

(3) NORTH CAROLINE STATE 66, NORTH CAROLINA 58: Kai Crutchfield scored 16 points and the Wolfpack (19-2, 10-0 ACC) rallied from a 12-point deficit to beat rival the Tar Heels (16-4, 6-4) in Chapel Hill, North Carolina.

Elissa Cunane added 11 points and 12 rebounds in the Wolfpack’s second recent show of comeback punch. N.C. State rallied from 14 down after three quarters to beat No. 5 Louisville on Jan. 20, then erased another a big first-half hole – this time on a court where N.C. State had lost with a top-10 ranking each of the previous two years.

(5) LOUISVILLE 77, (21) DUKE 65: Hailey Van Lith scored eight of her 17 points in the fourth quarter, Kianna Smith added five in the quarter and the Cardinals (18-2, 8-1 ACC) held off the Blue Devils (13-6, 4-5) in Louisville, Kentucky for their third consecutive victory.

The Cardinals appeared in control with a 20-point lead just after halftime. Shayeann Day-Wilson scored five consecutive points to get Duke within 62-57 early in the fourth before Smith and Hailey Van Lith answered with a layup and 3-pointer, respectively, and Emily Engstler added a jumper for a 69-57 cushion.

(10) UCONN 69, PROVIDENCE 61: Christyn Williams scored 19 points to help the Huskies (13-4, 8-0 Big East) beat the Friars (9-11, 4-7) in Providence, Rhode Island.

Providence has dropped 30 straight games to UConn dating back to 1993.

(12) LSU 78, KENTUCKY 69: Khayla Pointer scored 19 of her 28 points in the fourth quarter as the Tigers (18-4, 6-3 SEC) pulled away from the struggling Wildcats (9-9, 2-6) in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, giving first-year Tigers Coach Kim Mulkey her 650th career win.

Alexis Morris added 20 points for the Tigers, who trailed 54-48 entering the fourth quarter after an 8-0 Kentucky run.

(14) GEORGIA TECH 69, CLEMSON 62: Sarah Bates hit five 3-pointers and finished with 16 points – both season highs – and Nerea Hermosa scored eight of her 12 points in the fourth quarter to help the Yellow Jackets (17-4, 8-2 ACC) beat the Tigers (7-14, 1-9) at Clemson, South Carolina.

(15) GEORGIA 62, (24) MISSISSIPPI 52: Jenna Staiti tossed in 22 points and grabbed 11 rebounds, and the Bulldogs (16-4, 5-3 SEC) rolled to a victory over the Rebels (17-4, 5-3) in Oxford, Mississippi.

(17) MARYLAND 82, PENN STATE 71: Diamond Miller led a balanced attack with 19 points, Chole Bibby had her first double-double of the season and the Terrapins (15-6, 7-3 Big Ten) defeated the Nittany Lions (9-11, 3-7) for the 12th straight time, in University Park, Pennsylvania.

(19) OREGON 80, USC 48: Nyara Sabally scored 23 points on 9-of-12 shooting and the Ducks (13-5, 6-1 Pac-12) rolled to a win over the Trojans (9-9, 2-6) in Eugene, Oregon.

(20) NOTRE DAME 74, BOSTON COLLEGE 61: Freshman Olivia Miles poured in a career-high 30 points and the Fighting Irish (16-4, 7-2 ACC) breezed to a victory over the Eagles (14-7, 5-5) in South Bend, Indiana.

MEN’S BASKETBALL

BATES 83, BOWDOIN 77: Stephon Baxter scored 25 points, and the Bobcats (7-8, 1-5 NESCAC) held off Bowdoin’s late comeback bid in a win over the Polar Bears (10-10, 1-6) at Brunswick.

Jahmir Primer added 21 points and Simon McCormick had 19 for Bates.

A layup by McCormack gave Bates a 66-49 lead with 5:10 remaining, but Bowdoin got as close as 76-72 on a 3-pointer by James McGowan with 28 seconds left before the Bobcats closed it out.

McGowan finished with 17 points, Manav Randhawa scored 14, and Xander Werkman and Jack Shea each had 12 for Bowdoin.

(6) PURDUE 81, OHIO STATE 78: Jaden Ivey hit a tiebreaking 3-pointer with 0.6 seconds left and the Boilermakers (18-3, 7-3 Big Ten) fended off a late charge from the Buckeyes (13-5, 6-3) for a win in West Lafayette, Indiana.

The Boilermakers led 52-32 with 14:35 left, but the Buckeyes methodically fought their way back and finally tied it at 78 on E.J. Liddell’s 3 with 25.3 seconds to go.

(11) WISCONSIN 66, MINNESOTA 60: Johnny Davis had 16 points and a career-high 15 rebounds and took over the game in the final minutes as the Badgers (17-3, 8-2 Big Ten) beat the Gophers (11-7, 2-7), in Madison, Wisconsin.

Wisconsin earned its ninth win in its last 10 games to tie Illinois (15-5, 8-2) for the Big Ten lead, with No. 10 Michigan State (16-4, 7-2) just a half-game behind. Wisconsin visits Illinois on Wednesday.

(17) PROVIDENCE 65, (22) MARQUETTE 63: Nate Watson was fouled on a dunk and completed the three-point play in the final minute to help the Friars (18-2, 8-1 Big East) rally to a win over the Golden Eagles (15-7, 7-4), in Providence, Rhode Island.

Watson finished with 17 points and six rebounds. Justin Minaya had 14 points and Noah Horchler finished with 11 points and 10 rebounds.

WOMEN’S HOCKEY

MAINE 4, PROVIDENCE 1: Ida Kuoppala notched two power-play goals and the Black Bears (12-13-1, 10-8-1 Hockey East) extended their winning streak to six by completing a weekend sweep against the Friars (8-12-5, 5-11-2) at Providence, Rhode Island.

Ally Johnson and Mira Seregely also scored for Maine, and Jorden Mattison made 31 saves. Caroline Peterson ended Mattison’s shutout bid with 1:26 remaining.

SOUTHERN MAINE 4, PLYMOUTH STATE 0: Madison Chagnon, Shannon Douglas and Madelyn McLeish scored in a six-minute span of the first period, starting the Huskies (12-8, 9-5 NEHC) on their way to a win over the Panthers (6-11-1, 4-8) in Gorham.

Jess MacLean added a third-period goal, and Haley McKim made 33 saves for the shutout.

COLBY 2, TRINITY 1: Lexi Cafiero tied the game with a short-handed goal in the third period and Bri Michaud-Nolan scored 3:21 into overtime to give the Mules (11-3, 7-3 NESCAC) a win over the Bantams (6-7-1, 2-5) at Hartford, Connecticut.
