The Kennebec Historical Society’s February Facebook Live Presentation, “Rediscovering Rachel Field — The extraordinary book journey that led to ‘The Field House,’” is set for 6:30 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 16, by writer Robin Clifford Wood, according to a news release from the society.

In her talk, Wood will tell the story of her book journey and her connection with her biographical subject. In addition to sharing scenic and historic photos, Wood will play an audio recording of Field’s voice from a vintage radio show.

Field was a National Book award winner, Newbery Medal winner, and rising writer-celebrity in Hollywood when she died suddenly and mysteriously in 1942 at the age of 47, according to an event news release.

Fifty years later, Wood purchased Field’s former summer home on a tiny island in Maine. Surrounded by Field’s possessions in her beloved space, Wood became enchanted by her and launched a quest to discover the secrets in her forgotten story, shrouded by tragedy.

“The Field House: A Writer’s Life Lost and Found on an Island in Maine” is a hybrid of biography and memoir, the result of a nine-year odyssey of research that brought two women’s writing lives to life. The award-winning book, published in May 2021, has gone into its fourth printing.

Wood is an author, poet and teacher. Her work has appeared in Bangor Metro, Bangor Daily News, Port City Life, Maine Public, Maine Review, Literary Ladies’ Guide, Book Babble, Writes4Women.com, Lighten Up Online, and Solstice Literary Magazine, which published her essay “How Do You Help Your Parents Die?”

“The Field House” is her first book.
