Vose Library plans to continue its Vose or Virtual Wednesday series with local author and historian Earl H. Smith at 7 p.m. Wednesday, March 2, via Zoom.

Smith will highlight the stories of more than 50 Maine inventors and inventions. From Moxie to machine guns, Caterpillar wheels to Dixie cups, insulin to elevators, Maine is the birthplace of many a tinkerer and his or her great notion, some known and others obscured by the veil of history until now, according to a news release from the Union library

Smith revisits the stories of those inventors and offers a compendium of people with Maine roots who helped change the world with their creations during the transformational era following the Civil War.

A Waterville native, Smith’s 40-year career at Colby College ended in retirement in 2002. He continues to serve as the college’s historian and as a commissioner of the Maine State Museum.

Smith is the author of six books, including “Mayflower Hill,” a history of Colby College, “With the Help of Friends,” a history of the Colby Art Museum, and “Water Village,” a history of Waterville.

His novels include “The Dam Committee and Head of Falls.” He has served on the Waterville City Council and Board of Education, and as a member of the Maine House of Representatives.

Closed captioning will be available. To receive a Zoom link registration link, call 207-785-4733, email librarian@voselibrary.org or stop by the library at 392 Common Road.
