David “Dave” Burrill

CANAAN – Dave passed away unexpectedly on Feb. 9, 2022 with his wife of 61 years, Andra, his daughter, Wendy and son, Paul by his side. He was born in 1940 to Malcolm and Mildred Burrill.

In addition to his wife and children, he is survived by his grandson, Kyle; brothers Donald, Dale and Larry, a sister, Marcia; son-in-law Jeff; step-grandson Jacob; step-great-granddaughter Kaylyn, step-great-grandsons Evan and Owen; and many nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends that were like family.

Dave worked as an outside salesman of auto parts and garage equipment covering a territory from Corinna to Kingfield and beyond. He won many sales contests and awards including being named Napa’s Outside Salesperson of the Year in 1999. In 2018, he was awarded the Spirit of America Award for service to the Town of Canaan and Canaan Fire Dept. In 2019, the Maine State Legislature awarded him the Spirit of America Foundation Award for service to his community.

Dave was a pillar of the community he grew up in and lived in. He was a past selectman, moderator for Town Meeting, Fire Warden and Fire Chief. He was a 50-plus year member of Carrabassett Masonic Lodge #161. Dave’s lifelong passion was the Canaan Volunteer Fire Dept. He dedicated 68 of his 81 years to the Department right up until the time of his passing. He mentored countless young men and women who joined the Department. The fire radio, pager and scanner were always on in the house and in his truck. He was a man of integrity, whose word was better than any contract. He was a man of few words, but those who knew him, knew they should be paying attention when he spoke. His passing will leave a huge void, not only for his family, but for the Town of Canaan as well.

He enjoyed hunting and fishing, spending the month of November at his hunting camp.

In July there will a graveside service, with Fire Dept. ceremony and Masonic ceremony, followed by a celebration of his life in Canaan.

Arrangements are under the care and direction of Smart and Edwards Funeral Home. http://www.SmartandEdwardsFH.com.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in his honor to Canaan Volunteer Fire Dept., P.O. Box 488, Canaan, ME 04924
