Philip F. Chapman Jr.

WINTHROP – Philip F. Chapman Jr, 70, passed away unexpectedly at home on Wednesday, March 9, 2022. He was the husband of Jeanette B. (Foster) Chapman with whom he shared 47 years of marriage.

Philip was born December 6, 1951, in Norway, Maine. He is the son of the late Philip F. and Phyllis (Kennison) Chapman. He was a resident of Winthrop for many years and graduated from Oxford Hills High School, class of 1970. Philip also attended a trade school where he studied Auto Body.

He was a United States Army veteran and served during 1970-1973.

Philip, fondly known by all as “Gus,” enjoyed hunting with his son Philip and Grandson’s Zachary and Tristan, golfing, fishing at Horseshoe Pond, Maranacook Lake, Echo Lake, & Jug Stream, playing with his pool sharks, eating sweets, spending time with family and friends, and listening to country music. Angela and her Dad would text good morning and good night, they would share and steal each other’s sweets, played practical jokes, and picked on each other lovingly. Granka took great pleasure in calling Lynmarie his favorite Granddaughter. He spent many days in his little boat fishing with Joseph. Gus and Jeanette shared a love of travel. They would visit friends and family, float on Wilson Pond in their boat, listen to music while Gus played pool with their friends, or simply enjoyed each other’s company. His true devotion was his cherished grandchildren, where he enjoyed and supported their many activities. Granka was always there to watch and share time with them. Gus enjoyed the special times he spent with nieces and nephews hunting, fishing, and boating. He was also a longtime member of the Alfred W. Maxwell American Legion, Winthrop, the Oxford Lodge of Masons A.F & A.M. as well as the Augusta Elks Lodge 964.

He worked as a mail sorter and later a window worker for the United States Postal Service in Augusta for 25 years until his retirement in 2013.

When his children were growing up, he volunteered his time coaching the local sports teams in Winthrop.  He also worked in the auto body shop at Charlies Chevrolet, formally known as Barrows Chevrolet.

In addition to his loving wife Jeanette, Philip is survived by his loving children Philip F. Chapman, III and his wife Alicia, Angela Cormier, and her husband Ryan all of Winthrop.
