A broken water pipe forced the closure of the Maine State House Monday.
The State House will remain closed Tuesday to staff and the public, said Suzanne Gresser, executive director of the Maine Legislature. Committee meetings scheduled to be held Tuesday will still take place remotely, Gresser said in a telephone interview Monday night.
Legislative staff, who use State House rooms to broadcast and manage meetings, will work out of the Cross Office Building, adjacent to the State House, she said.
Gresser said the extent of the damage, the cost to repair the damage, and what caused the pipe to burst are still not known. It is also unclear whether the State House will be ready to reopen Wednesday, she said.
Earlier Monday, Gresser said there was water on the floor of the ground level of the State House and crews were still investigating the extent of the damage from the burst pipe.
“It was quite a way to start the day,” she said.
The Veterans and Legal Affairs Committee was the only one scheduled to be held at the State House Monday and was delayed until it could be moved to the Cross Office Building next door.
