Gasoline prices held steady in Maine over the past week after escalating rapidly in the early days of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, Boston-based price comparison service GasBuddy said Monday.

The average price for regular gasoline in Maine was unchanged Sunday from a week earlier at a record high of $4.26 per gallon based on a survey of 1,228 gas stations, GasBuddy said in a news release. Prices in Maine were up about 78 cents per gallon from a month ago and $1.46 per gallon from a year ago, it said.

According to GasBuddy, the cheapest gasoline in Maine was priced at $3.55 per gallon Sunday, while the most expensive was at $4.59 per gallon, a difference of $1.04 per gallon.

The national average price of gasoline also remained steady, averaging $4.32 a gallon. The national average was up 84 cents per gallon from a month ago and was $1.47 per gallon higher than a year ago, GasBuddy said.

“After a furious increase in the national average over the last two weeks, the top appears to be in with average gas prices slowly starting to decline over the last few days,” Patrick De Haan, head of petroleum analysts at GasBuddy, said in the release. “While the decrease could be short-lived, it is nonetheless a well-needed break from the large surge in gas prices we’ve experienced over the last few weeks.”

De Haan said the situation remains fluid, and that further price escalations remain “very possible, if not likely.”

“For now, a $4.50-per-gallon national average is off the table, but it certainly could be a future possibility as long as there is conflict between Russia and Ukraine,” he said.
