Richard M. Reed

WILMINGTON, N.C. – Richard “Dicky” Reed passed away on March 9, 2022 in Wilmington, N.C. following a brief but courageous battle with cancer, with his daughter and niece by his side. He was born in Waterville on June 27, 1946 to Raymond and Mary (Bush) Reed.

He was educated in the Fairfield schools and graduated from Lawrence High School, class of 1966. He served in the U.S. Army during the Vietnam War and was honorably discharged in 1972. He was married to Karen Frost until her death in 1972. He was later married to Davida Steward until her death in 2014.

Dicky loved to fish, especially up to Moxie Lake. Dicky and Davida would drag us up to Moxie every weekend camping and fishing with friends and family. It didn’t matter if it was 30 degrees and pouring or 90 degrees and sunny. It was always an adventure!

My dad was an amazing human being. He was the best dad, grandfather, great-grandfather, uncle and friend. He was a comedian right up until the end!

He loved playing softball with his friends back in the day. He was our biggest supporter with all of the sports we played. He was so proud of his kids and especially his grandkids!

He was predeceased by his parents; brother, Reggie Reed, sisters Muriel (Cookie) Leclair and Cathy Buker.

He is survived by his children, daughter, Maryanne Reed Campbell, of Wilmington N.C., sons Chris Chase, of Auburn and Richard Eric Reed (Stacey), of Clinton; grandchildren Caleb and Cody Campbell, of Waterville, Haleigh Chase, of Fayette, Colby Chase, of Wilton, Gabrielle and Reese Reed, of Clinton; his only great-grandson, Lee Haynes, of Fayette; a special niece, Deborah Dufour, who took care of him when he was first diagnosed and niece, Lisa Coleman, who opened up her home in North Carolina so he could enjoy the quiet and beautiful weather until he passed; his sisters Shannon Bizier (Jeremiah), Audrey (Honey) Genness (Neil) and Joanne Harding (Eugene); several nieces, nephews, cousins and in-laws from both of his marriages. He also “adopted” a lot of kids that were friends with his kids and the children of his best friends.

A celebration of life will be held at Shannon’s home in Oakland on June 25. The details will be shared with everyone as it gets closer.

Arrangements were made with Coastal Cremations in Wilmington, N.C.
