He remained a loyal Tigers fan throughout his life. Leonard served in the U.S. Navy during the Korean War period, aboard the USS Kula Gulf. He was proud to serve his country, and was later an active member and commander of his local American Legion. In 1956, he began his 41-year career as a lineman for the phone company, at that time called “Ma Bell.” He earned the nickname “Mr. Overtime” for his dedicated service and had a funny tale about almost every pole or job site he encountered. Leonard’s pastimes included playing cards and beano, doing crossword puzzles, rooting for the Red Sox and the Patriots, watching cowboy movies, game shows, and the Three Stooges, and daily phone calls with his brother Philip. He loved spending time outside in all seasons. He will be fondly remembered sitting in his preferred sunny spot on his deck with a cup of coffee, a smile, and a good story for all who stopped by for a visit. His favorite hobby was spending time with his grandchildren and great-grandchildren, and he was never too busy to read a book, take a walk, or play a game with them. “Bump” enriched their lives with his storytelling, his sense of humor, and his love for a little bit of mischief. Leonard described himself as a rich man. He considered the love of his family his greatest treasure, and he believed that one could find a reason to be grateful and to laugh every day.
