Glen Wilder Hayden

SKOWHEGAN – Glen Wilder Hayden, 90, of 18 Leavitt St., Skowhegan, died on March 16, 2022 at his residence. He was born at his Grandmother Hayden’s home in Cornville on July 12, 1931 about six weeks ahead of schedule.

He was the first son of the late Harvey Sr. and Della (Hayden) Sidell. This fragile preemie was held by loving family members in front of a Home Comfort’s woodstove open oven door for hours in attempt to help him survive. In an account of his early days, his mother wrote “A teacup fit on Glen’s head and my wedding ring slipped over his wrist.”

Glen thrived, and became his father’s big helper on the family farm in Athens. The farm was known for its octagon barn, where his family lived for many years until the passing of his father.

Glen attended schools in Athens, and completed three years at Somerset Academy in Athens. He received his GED from SAD#54 in 1979. He and Viola Tolman were married Oct. 14, 1949, a union that lasted 71 years, until her passing on March 17, 2021. Glen and Viola lived in Athens for six years before buying a home in Solon; then moved to Skowhegan in 1965.

In addition to working on the farm with his father, and receiving training in operating heavy equipment, Glen worked for Department of Transportation, H.G. Sargent, Littlefield & Son and Larry Sylvain. Glen retired from Hammond Lumber’s Door and Window Shop in Belgrade. While working 40+ hours a week, Glen also found time for many odd jobs, using his carpentry skills to complete many home projects, he even transformed his home on Leavitt Street into four apartments. He also built his daughter’s ranch style home in Cornville. After retirement, he continued working building garages and remodeling homes.

Glen and Viola were charted members of Trinity Evangelical Free Church in Skowhegan. Glen served in several positions in the church, including Sunday School teacher, Deacon and Elder. Many may remember some of the special wood projects Mr. Hayden helped create at Vacation Bible School or Adventure Club.

Glen was a quiet, humble, hardworking man. He never took vacations, barely watched tv and had no hobbies or “toys”. He was happiest when busy gathering with his children and grandchildren for a meal, and serving others. Up through his early 80″s, Glen was only a phone call away to lend a helping hand to his family. In 2015 he replaced all the copper pipping with plastic in his daughter’s home. Later that same year he was on 10-foot scaffolding at his son’s home, helping remove shingles, when he fell, and spent a few months recuperating. Following that Glen endured two reverse shoulder surgeries; and a hip surgery after a fall in 2020. He never complained through countless hours of physical therapy. His goal was to complete “just one more project”.

Glen was predeceased by his parents; wife Viola, son Marshall Glen (1971); and his sisters Fern Hayden as an infant and Freda Rowell.

Survivors include his daughters Glenna (James) Pomelow of Cornville, and Irene (Maurice, Jr) Magoon of Skowhegan, his sons Russell (Donna) Hayden of Cornville, and Kendall (RoJean) of Pottersville, N.Y.; his grandchildren Brandon (Valerie) Pomelow of Athens, Nolan (Julie) Pomelow of Williamsville, N.Y., Erin (Tyler) Nelson of Skowhegan, Amy (James) Walton of Manchester, Andrea Magoon of Cornville, Andrew (Ginger) Magoon of Hinkley, Anthony Magoon of Canaan, Adrian (Evelyn) Magoon of Schroon Lake N.Y., Nichole (Brian) McCloy of West Bradenton, Fla., Sylvia (Andy) Cote of Bangor, Donnie Hayden of Cornville, Deanna (Devon) Meservie of Norridgewock; Kyle (Bree) Hayden of Schroon Lake, Kirk Hayden of Schroon Lake, and Kaylee Hayden of Pottersville, N.Y.; his great-grandchildren Kaitlyn (Bill) Allen of North Anson, Alex and Jackson Pomelow of Williamsville, N.Y., Wilder Walton of Manchester, Evan Stevens of Cornville, Evelyn and Benjamin Magoon of Hinkley, Ellison, Kerrington and Britton of W.
