Sumner Glazier

PITTSTON – Sumner Glazier Jr., “Juju”, 92, passed away on Wednesday, March 23, 2022, in the arms of Jean Glazier, his beloved wife of 63 years, and surrounded by his family. He has resided at the Maine Veterans Homes in Augusta for the past three years and made the move to the new facility one day before his passing.

A 1948 graduate of Cony High School, he then served four years in the Navy. He was honorably discharged in 1952 and purchased the C & S Market on Riverside Drive in Augusta with his father and brother which he owned and operated for 25 years.

In 1958, Juju married Jean Pulsifer. They have three children, seven grandchildren, and nine great-grandchildren with #10 coming soon!

In 1978, he was hired by the state of Maine as secretary to the Maine Parole Board. He later switched departments and became a health inspector, visiting schools, nursing homes, restaurants, and camps. He retired in 1994.

If you asked Juju what the highlights of his life have been, he would have told you about the camp he built in Sangerville, living in his log cabin dream home, a fishing trip to Alaska with his son, and canoe trips on the Allagash. He was also particularly proud of climbing Mt. Katahdin numerous times with youth groups from Penney Memorial United Baptist Church. Juju served on the board of deacons and board of trustees at his church, was a Mason who served as Master of his Lodge, and was a coach of Augusta East Little League team.

He is survived by his wife, Jean Glazier of Pittston; daughter Julie Whittemore and her husband Jeff of Springfield, Mass., son Steven and his wife Susan of West Gardiner, daughter Chery Ouellette and her husband Gary of Sidney, “adopted” son Phat Tran and his wife Rita of Pittston; grandchildren Daniel and Deb Whittemore of Windsor, Conn., Denise and Mark Jones of Richmond, Amy and Matthew Emery of Rome, James and Felicity Ouellette of Sidney, Matthew and Elysia Glazier of Augusta, Michael and Caroline Glazier of Pennsylvania, Diane Tran of Pittston; great-grandchildren, Anna, Isaac, Ethan, Haddie, Toby, Brayden, Chloe, Summer, and Deacon; one sister Arlene Gardner of Augusta; and many nephews and nieces scattered throughout New England and beyond.

Friends and relatives are invited to visit Tuesday, March 29 from 11:30 a.m. – 12:30 p.m. at Knowlton & Hewins Funeral Home, One Church St., Augusta, with a memorial service beginning at 12:30 p.m., followed by a committal service with full military honors at 2:00 p.m. in the chapel at the new Maine Veterans Memorial Cemetery, 163 Mount Vernon Road in Augusta.
