Leroy E. Capen

AUGUSTA – Leroy Edward Capen, 83, of Augusta, Maine, passed away peacefully at home on Monday, following a brief battle with aggressive brain cancer. He was surrounded by his children and wife of 66 years. Leroy was born on Jan. 18, 1939 at Gardiner General Hospital. He was the fourth of six children of Charlene and Earl Capen. Leroy loved growing up in a large family, but was considered quite a “wanderer,” since he was always looking for the next fun adventure. Leroy was an amazing husband, dad, papa and great papa.He is survived by his wife, Faylene Capen, six children, Debbie Dodge and husband David of Manchester, Mark Capen of Yarmouth, Glen Capen of Whitefield, Nancy Feeney and husband Mike of Fayette, Susan Burke and husband Joe of Vassalboro, and Sharon Cook and husband Jeff of Yarmouth, 15 grandchildren, and 12 great grandchildren.Leroy has three living siblings, Sandra Peaslee of Boothbay, Reita Suitter of Gardiner, and Kimber Capen of Goffstown, New Hampshire, and predeceased by his siblings, Ann Smart and Earlene Neptune.Leroy and Fay raised their family in Gardiner where he served as a member and leader of the Gardiner Nazarene Church. He loved Jesus and was known to share his faith with others. As a self taught musician, Leroy enjoyed singing and playing his guitar in church and with friends. Beyond Leroy’s musical talents, he was also a gifted carpenter. He used those skills to renovate and finish two homes and to make beautiful wood crafts. After retiring from Bath Iron Works, Fay and Leroy shared many wonderful years traveling and escaping the Maine cold winters in Myrtle Beach.
