Herbert Leslie Quimby

STARKS – On March 30, 2022, Herbert Leslie Quimby, son of Frank and Elsie Ladd Quimby, passed away peacefully at Sandy River Rehab in Farmington, after an extended illness. He was married to the former Janice Libby Willis on May 22, 1993 and they spent nearly 29 wonderful years together. Herb grew up on the River Road in Starks and graduated from Madison Memorial High School in 1958. While a student, he played football and was active in the Future Farmers of America. He was a hard worker, spending most of his adult life delivering heating oil, working on furnaces and in time, owning his own oil business.Eventually, he moved back to the land he grew up on and began farming. He raised Hereford for beef, then Holstein and Jersey cows for milk production until his health did not allow him to continue. In 1994 he and Janice built a church in Starks with the help of friends, family, and neighbors, culminating with the first service of the Sandy River Chapel on Jan. 2, 1995. Herb was quick witted, always giving you a chuckle at the things he said. He was a great storyteller with many adventures over the years that he loved sharing over a cup of tea and a doughnut. He was generous with his time, talent, and resources and would give the shirt off his back to help someone in need. He loved tractors, his favorite was a red Farmall, and bought, traded, and restored them. Herb had a love for animals of all kinds and had many dogs and cats throughout his lifetime. He raised pigs one year and couldn’t bear the thought of sending them to the butcher so he gave them away. He particularly loved his Cairn Terriers, Sugar and Angel. Angel gave him such comfort during his last years. He also loved the Lord and we are consoled by the fact that he is in heaven with Jesus. Herb was predeceased by his parents: and sisters Dorothy Witham, Thelma Bean, Ethel Foss, Shirley Paine; and his special cousin, Clifton Quimby, who was like a brother to him. He is survived by his wife Janice; sister, Gertrude Robbins; children Sandy Smith (Jim), Randy Quimby (Penni), Korry Dunham (Bill), and Tom Quimby (Tammy). He is also survived by 10 grandchildren, Matt Kelley, April Kelly, Jessica Molley, Ryan Quimby, Travis Quimby, Sarah Carter, Billy Dunham, Jason Dunham, Andrea Quimby, and Amanda Waring; and 11 great-grandchildren; sister-in-law, Norma Dempsey of South Carolina; and many nieces and nephews. Visiting hours will be from 4 to 7 p.m. on Friday, April 8 at Giberson’s Funeral Home, 40 Maple St., in Madison. A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, April 9 at the Sandy River Chapel, 565 Sandy River Rd., Starks. Burial will be held later in the spring at Sunset Cemetery in North Anson.
