ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. — Two-time Cy Young Award winner Corey Kluber looked good in his debut with the Tampa Bay Rays, pitching 4 2/3 scoreless innings Sunday to help the defending AL East champions beat Baltimore 8-0 and complete an opening sweep of the Orioles.

Brandon Lowe hit a two-run homer off Tyler Wells (0-1), while Wander Franco had his second three-hit game in three days and drove in a pair of runs as the Rays beat the Orioles for the 15th straight time and matched the fastest start to a season in club history.

Tampa Bay, which is 21-1 against the Orioles since the beginning of last year, also started 3-0 in 2002 and 2012.

Kluber, pitching on his 36th birthday, allowed three hits, walked four and struck out five in an 87-pitch outing. Sailing along with a 4-0 lead, the right-hander retired the first two batters in the fifth inning before walking Cedric Mullins and giving up a single to Ryan Mountcastle.

ASTROS 4, ANGELS 1: Alex Bregman put the Astros ahead with a two-run single in the fifth, and José Urquidy yielded four hits over five innings in Houston’s victory in Anaheim, California.

Chas McCormick had an RBI single, and rookie shortstop Jeremy Peña, who starred at the University of Maine, delivered three hits as the defending AL champions took three of four in their opening series at Angel Stadium.

Bregman began life without longtime teammate Carlos Correa by pounding out six hits – including two homers – and driving in six runs in Houston’s first four games, highlighted by his two-out, two-RBI single off reliever Austin Warren in the finale.

WHITE SOX 10, TIGERS 1: Tim Anderson swung right back into action after serving a suspension stemming from an incident last season, hitting two doubles and a single as Chicago won in Detroit.

Andrew Vaughn homered and drove in four runs for the White Sox, who won twice in the season-opening three-game series.

Anderson sat out the first two games as a penalty for making contact with an umpire on Sept. 27.

TWINS 10, MARINERS 4: Gary Sánchez hit a grand slam into the third deck and Byron Buxton had two of Minnesota’s six home runs as the Twins slugged their way past visiting Seattle for their first victory of the season.

Carlos Correa launched his first homer for Minnesota. Max Kepler and Jorge Polanco also went deep, and Sánchez added an RBI double to give him five RBI for the Twins, who totaled eight hits over 2-1 and 4-3 defeats on Friday and Saturday.

Bailey Ober logged five innings for the win, handed more than enough cushion to withstand a three-run homer in the third by Mitch Haniger.

RANGERS 12, BLUE JAYS 6: Corey Seager capped a six-run fourth inning with a go-ahead single, and Texas rallied from a five-run deficit to overcome Vladimir Guerrero Jr.’s 467-foot home run and win in Toronto.

Guerrero’s third-inning home run off Spencer Howard, the longest of Guerrero’s career, built a 6-1 lead.

After blowing a seven-run advantage in 10-8 loss in Friday’s opener, Texas tuned this game around with its biggest road inning since a six-run first at Baltimore on Sept. 7, 2019. Brad Miller had four RBI to key the Rangers, and Nick Solak scored four runs and homered.

GUARDIANS 17, ROYALS 3: The Cleveland Guardians won for the first time with their new name as hot-starting rookie Steven Kwan went 5 for 5  in a romp in Kansas City, Missouri.

Oscar Mercado hit a grand slam during a five-RBI performance and Owen Miller drove in a career-high four runs. Cleveland had lost its first two games since changing this season to the Guardians from the Indians, its name since 1915.

NATIONAL LEAGUE

PIRATES 9, CARDINALS 4: Michael Chavis hit a go-ahead grand slam as Pittsburgh overcame a three-run, third-inning deficit, and Pirates beat host St. Louis for their first win this season.

Chavis made his first start of the season and homered off left-hander Steven Matz (0-1), who allowed seven runs and nine hits over three innings in his first start since signing a $44 million, four-year contract.

It was the second slam of Chavis’ big league career. He finished a triple shy of the cycle.

BREWERS 5, CUBS 4: Mike Brosseau’s first career pinch-hit homer snapped a tie in the seventh inning, and Milwaukee won in Chicago for its first victory of the season.

Willy Adames and Rowdy Tellez also went deep, helping the reigning NL Central champions overcome a shaky performance by Freddy Peralta. Christian Yelich had two hits and drove in a run.

After Brosseau connected, Milwaukee’s vaunted bullpen took over.

Brad Boxberger (1-0) worked the seventh, stranding a runner on third when Jonathan Villar was retired on a close call at first base that was upheld by a replay review. Devin Williams then got three outs before Josh Hader pitched a 1-2-3 ninth for his first save.

REDS 6, BRAVES 3: Hard-throwing Hunter Greene won his major league debut, Kyle Farmer hit a two-run single in a five-run third inning and Cincinnati won in Atlanta.

Greene (1-0) lived up to his billing as a top prospect with overpowering velocity. He regularly touched 100 mph on the radar gun, topped out at 102 in the fourth and was still hitting triple digits in his final inning. The right-hander allowed three runs, four hits and three walks with seven strikeouts in five innings.

The Reds took a 5-0 lead in the third. Jonathan India walked and scored from first when Tyler Naquin doubled to the right-field corner. Braves starter Ian Anderson (0-1) loaded the bases on a pair of walks, giving up two more runs on a force out and Colin Moran’s single. Sean Newcomb then gave up a two-run single to Farmer.

NATIONALS 4, METS 2: Nelson Cruz hit his 450th home run and added a tiebreaking two-run single in three-run eighth inning that lifted Washington over the Mets and prevented New York from an opening four-game sweep in Washington.

Washington trailed 2-1 in the eighth when Yadiel Hernández singled leading off against Chasen Shreve, and Maikel Franco singled pinch-runner Dee Strange-Gordon to third against Trevor Williams (0-1).

Lucius Fox, who started in his major league debut, dragged a safety squeeze sacrifice bunt, and Strange-Gordon slid home headfirst ahead of first baseman Pete Alonso’s underhand toss.

GIANTS 3, MARLINS 2: Heliot Ramos had two hits and scored a run in his major league debut, and San Francisco won at home.

Mauricio Dubón added an RBI double for the Giants, who scored the decisive run in the third inning after a throwing error by Miami pitcher Trevor Rogers.

Jorge Soler had three hits and a walk for the Marlins. Joey Wendle singled twice and scored two runs.

ROCKIES 9, DODGERS 4: C.J. Cron drilled a two-run homer on an afternoon when the whipping wind made flyballs an adventure, and Colorado beat the visiting Dodgers to give Bud Black his 1,000th win as a major league manager.

Black became the 66th skipper to reach the milestone. He improved to 351-360 with Colorado after going 649-713 with the San Diego Padres from 2007-15.

PADRES 10, DIAMONDBACKS 5: Jurickson Profar hit a grand slam, Jorge Alfaro followed with another homer and San Diego used a big second inning to win their third straight game, beating Arizona in Phoenix.

The Padres sent 10 hitters to the plate in the second and the first seven reached base, starting with Jake Cronenworth on an error by second baseman Ketel Marte. Luke Voit and Wil Myers followed with walks and then Profar hammered a hanging slider from left-hander Caleb Smith into the left-center seats.

It’s been a good start for Profar, who also homered on Friday. He helped the Padres win three of four in the series.

INTERLEAGUE

ATHLETICS 4, PHILLIES 1: Billy McKinney homered and Daulton Jefferies and four relievers combined on a three-hitter to lead Oakland past to a win in Philadelphia to avert a three-game sweep.

The A’s shut down a Phillies offense that scored 13 runs in the first two games of the series. The Phillies’ only two hits through the first five innings came from backups Garrett Stubbs and Johan Camargo.

Jean Segura hit his second homer of the season for the Phillies in the ninth off Lou Trivino.
