Jamie Dietrich

NEW YORK CITY – Jamie Dietrich of New York City died peacefully and on her own terms April 14, 2022. She was born Feb. 18, 1927 in Dallas, Texas to Jimmie and Elizabeth Caldwell.

She left home at the age of 17 to study ballet at the School of American Ballet in New York City. She met her husband Bob Dietrich in Summer Stock where she was dancing and he was playing the flute. They had 68 loving years together before his death in 2020. For a time she had her own ballet school where she did everything herself: teaching, choreographing and ordering costumes for recitals and all of the bookkeeping. She fully enjoyed having her school but chose to close it in 1960 to focus on raising her children.

She was an avid knitter and reader, reading the New York Times daily and having intelligent discussions about articles right up until her death. She was a lifelong political activist working tirelessly for world peace and was once arrested at a demonstration against nuclear power. She really loved the beach and spent many hours there, alone and with her family.

She was predeceased by her husband, Bob Dietrich; and her sister, Betty Caldwell.

She is survived by her three daughters, Sara Donovan of Embden, Michelle Kozofsky of Hampton Bays, N.Y. and Maddie Mcgee of New York City; two granddaughters, Alana Camenga of Gray and Mora Camenga of Winthrop; two great-grandchildren, Vera and Milo of Winthrop; and many others locally and across the country.

Many thanks are given to the staff of Vista On 5th who cared for her in her last year.

Jamie Dietrich
