JAY – Virginia “Gini” (Brown) Longley, of Jay, passed away peacefully on Mother’s Day, May 8, 2022, after a long hard battle with Alzheimer’s. She is the wife of the late Joseph Longley.She was born in Augusta on July 1, 1941, the daughter of Dorothy Patten and Earl Brown. She grew up in Winthrop and was a graduate of the Winthrop High School class of 1959, where she enjoyed cheerleading and basketball. In her earlier years, she worked as a legal secretary and various other jobs in and around Winthrop, including owning and operating the Cobbossee Motel in East Winthrop. In 1970, she married Joseph Longley and moved to Jay. She worked as a secretary for the State of Maine, DHHS until her retirement. Gini had a love for camping and the family spent many summers at Riverbend Campground in Leeds. After retirement, she and her husband bought a 5th wheel camper and traveled all around the country, from Canada to Arizona, where she made many friends, but she had a hard time spending too much time away from her family, so she always came home sooner than expected. She also enjoyed crocheting, candlepin bowling, fishing, baking, playing cards, and cheering on her beloved Boston Celtics (which the family knew not to call her when the game was on) but most of all, spending time with her family. She was the best mom any child could ask for, even the neighborhood kids loved coming to her house and most of them called her “ma”. She was the most kind, caring, loving individual. She listened and did not judge; she had no favorites and loved all her children equally. She had a great sense of humor and loved to laugh. She will be deeply missed. She is survived by her daughters, Julie Barker and husband Gene of Winthrop, Jodi Kimball and husband Dwight of Readfield, her son, Joseph “Billy” Longley Jr. and wife Christine of Jay; grandchildren, Eric Thompson of Carmel, Evan Thompson of Glenburn, Joseph “Billy” Longley III of Lewiston, Bryana Longley of Lewiston, Hannah Bessette and husband Zach of Monmouth; and three great-grandsons. She is also survived by her brother Kenneth Patten of Winthrop and her sister Marie Hodgdon and husband Ron of Mt. Vernon. In addition to her husband and parents, Gini was predeceased by her daughter, Lori Thompson; and sister-in-law Sharon PattenThe family would like to thank the amazing staff at the Gardiner Alzheimer’s Care Center in Gardiner and Augusta Center for Health and Rehabilitation, Kennebec Wing, for the wonderful love and support provided to her during this time.In honoring with Gini’s request, there will be no funeral or visiting hours.
