Maryanne Elizabeth (Melko) Prince

AUGUSTA – Maryanne Elizabeth (Melko) Prince, 70, passed away on May 19, 2022, at the Alfond Center for Health in Augusta after a short but devastating illness. Maryanne was born Jan. 13, 1952, in Rapid City, S.D., the daughter of the late Walter J. and Mary Elizabeth (Masler) Melko.

A resident of Augusta for the past 15 years, she previously resided and worked in Montgomery, Ala., where she graduated from Faulkner University and received her Juris Doctor from the Thomas Goode Jones School of Law.

Maryanne was proud to be an attorney. At the time of her death, she served as an Attorney Advocate for the Maine Worker’s Compensation Board, where she loved her work and her co-workers. Previously, she worked as an attorney for the Maine Department of Labor. Before moving to Maine, she ran a private practice in Montgomery, Ala., focusing on civil litigation and criminal defense, often working on complex capital cases or representing indigent clients at the state and federal level.

Maryanne is survived by her husband of 28 years, Steven Prince of Augusta; her daughters, Keeley Ellakany of Harper’s Ferry, West Va., Shana Markham and her spouse Michael Mungcal of Bothell, Wash. and Catheranne “Caty” Wyly, and her spouse Sophia Bernhardt of New York City. Maryanne delighted to see her daughters grow into strong women with an even stronger sisterly bond. Additionally, she is survived by her sister Susan Hicks, with whom she often conspired to make mischief, and her spouse Casey Hicks of Knoxville, Tenn. She is also survived by three beloved grandchildren, Ada Mungcal, Eli Wyly Bernhardt, and Ephraim Wyly Bernhardt.

Maryanne loved many things: her family, her work, her mini-dachshund, Wendy, and her cats, Rose and Hootie. She loved traveling to her cabin in Greenville to go snowmobiling on the trails or boating on Moosehead Lake. She appreciated a quiet dinner with her husband or sharing an interesting story with her daughters through the online family chat. A good day often involved a hearty laugh, a superb glass of wine, and a scrub for one of her furry friends. Her family will miss her sharp mind, sense of humor, and incredible strength.
