Patricia Ames

CANAAN – Patricia Ames, 84, passed away peacefully at her home surrounded by family on May 18, 2022. Pat was born on February 20, 1938 in Athens, Maine. She was the daughter of Vernon and Leora (McKenney) Perkins.

One of six children, Pat spent most of her childhood on the Sand Road in Canaan. She enjoyed spending her days with her four sisters Jeannette (Emery), Hilda (Dangler), Carolyn (Steward), and Leona (Lapointe) and brother Glen Perkins, and they all remained close into their adult lives. Once they were grown and had families of their own, they still spent many Sundays and holidays together on the Sand Road.

Growing up in Canaan she met the love of her life, Stanley Ames, and after getting married on Oct. 27, 1956 they spent the next 65 years together. They raised three children, Tim, Cindy, and Darryl, on the Hinckley Road in Canaan.

Early in their marriage, Pat worked as a babysitter, at a local dry cleaner, and at McClellan’s clothing store. When Stan started his business Earth Movers, she became his bookkeeper – and the one we all know kept him in line.

Pat loved to travel and had many stories of trips across the country with Stan in their motorhome. She always looked forward to spending time (and having too much fun) with the “Swill Sisters”, and having sing-along lunch hours with the Ames ladies. The door was always open at Pat’s house and she loved to host family gatherings, reunions, and parties with friends.

Above all, family was most important to Pat, especially when she became a grandmother. Known fondly as “Gram”, her house became a second home for her grandchildren (and their friends, who also knew her only as “Gram”). The house always had the smell of Gram’s famous chocolate chip cookies, because as soon as the porcelain elephant-shaped cookie jar started to get low she’d whip up a fresh batch.

She is survived by her husband, Stanley of Canaan; her children, Timothy Ames and wife Nancy of Canaan, Cindy Clarke and husband Jeff of Canaan, and Darryl Ames and wife Denise of Gonic, NH; her grandchildren, Kris, Dale, Ryan, Peter, Scott, Nicole, and Cody; and her great-granddaughters, Kalen, Celine, Addison, and Nadia. Pat was predeceased by her mother, father, and her siblings.

A heartfelt thank you to her caregivers – Brenda, Cathy, Janice, Betty, and Kathryn and to the hospice nurses who cared for Pat.

A celebration of life will be held on Sunday, June 12, 2022 at 1 p.m. at T&B’s Celebration Center in Skowhegan.
