Mary Belanye Russell

AUGUSTA -Mary Belanye Russell, 96, passed away May 25, 2022. She was born in Pejepscot, Maine, on Oct. 19, 1925, to Mary Ann Hucovsky Belanye and Michael John Belanye Sr. Mary was four years old when she started school and she also skipped a grade so she was the youngest in her class to finish Brunswick High School in June 1942 at age 16. Mary worked as a lathe machine and tool room clerk during the war in the defense plant in the Hyde and Windless plant, a part of Bath Iron Works in Bath Maine. She also worked as a dining room hostess at the Hotel Eagle in Brunswick, Maine. Mary married Robert Fredrick Russell of Houlton, Maine on June 16, 1947. They were married for 69 years. She worked for the Maine Labor Department in Augusta for over 15-and-one-half years and also worked at Sears in Augusta, Maine. She was a lifetime member of the Disabled American Veteran’s, as was her husband Robert, who died on Jan. 10, 2017. She was also a member of the American Legion Auxiliary in Augusta. She was a member of Saint Mary’s Catholic Church.Mary lived in Massachusetts and took classes in Brookline, Mass., and the University of Maine in Augusta, adult classes. Mary is survived by her daughter, Sandra A. Stuart; her grandson, Raymond Stuart; and a great granddaughter, Brighton Stuart, all of North Carolina.She was predeceased by her sister Margaret Logan, her brother Michael J. Belanye Jr, both of Topsham; and her son Timothy Russell of Augusta. Services for Mary are private. Burial will take place at the Maine Veteran’s Memorial Cemetery on Mt. Vernon Road in Augusta.
