I’ve listened, discussed, read, traveled and evaluated many issues perplexing our great nation. From such I’ve gleaned the following:

Gun violence: The “ right to bear arms” is our right that is stated in our Constitution. It’s intent was to arm the militia. Now it has expanded so civilians can buy, sell, trade assault weapons. Those high-powered weapons are intended for military use to protect our country, not for the common civilian who plans to go hunting.

Therefore, we need accountability with consequences. Our country, the greatest and most generous, needs to have consistent accountability with consequences for actions taken that intentionally harm others. Let’s not say one thing and then do another. Be consistent in words and deeds. Live by example and find positivity in all that is good. Humanity needs this now.

Teaching high school for over 25 years I never had to raise my voice as students learned quickly I said what I meant, and meant what I said . Consistency was practiced and students knew the expectations presented. Education was and is the bulwark for success. That leads me to my final point.

How proud all Mainers should be with our exceptional educational system. We need to retain the very dedicated teachers who on a daily basis go above and beyond to allow intellectual discourse, and stimulate learning for all students K-Ph.D. Let’s support those faculty by paying their salaries commensurate with other top careers. Don’t eliminate staff or programs for the purpose of hiring new administrators until a full, open and transparent process has been completed.

From the recent findings, that seems to be the issue now with the University of Maine System. Michael Laliberte, the newly elected UMA president, decided to withdraw his position after an in-depth investigation. His payout salary, plus added housing expense, could have retained programs. Instead, officials should take that $600,000 from Chancellor Mallory’s salary, as “the buck stops there.”

Remember: accountability with consequences. Do what is just and right for all our wonderful citizens who work hard and play by the rules.
